'''Zhou Guangzhao''' a Chinese theoretical physicist of the twentieth century (1929-2024) who made important contributions to particle physics and to the theory of the strong interaction, and who as president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences championed science policy and reform.

== Early Life and Education ==
Zhou Guangzhao was born on 15 May 1929 in Changsha, in Hunan province, the son of a family with strong academic connections. He grew up during years of war and disruption, and his education was repeatedly interrupted, yet he showed exceptional ability in mathematics and physics and was admitted to Tsinghua University.

He studied physics at Tsinghua and then at Peking University, graduating in 1952, and he remained briefly as a researcher. In 1957 he travelled to the Soviet Union to pursue graduate study at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research at Dubna, then a major international centre for the physics of elementary particles.

At Dubna he worked on the theory of the weak and strong interactions and completed his doctorate. The environment was stimulating, with young physicists from many countries collaborating on the newly discovered particles and the puzzling behaviour of the forces that govern them, and it gave Zhou a broad international perspective on his field.

== Research in Particle Physics ==
Zhou Guangzhao's early research concerned the physics of elementary particles and the strong nuclear force. In the 1960s he worked on the theory of the weak interaction and proposed ideas about the structure of the particles then being discovered, contributing to a period of rapid change in the understanding of the subatomic world.

The discovery in 1974 of the particle known as the J/psi, made independently by two research groups, transformed the field. Zhou and his collaborators analysed the properties of this particle and of those related to it, working on the newly recognised fourth quark and the theory of the strong interaction known as quantum chromodynamics.

He is particularly remembered for work on the so-called parton model and on the production of particles in high-energy collisions, and for a clear account of the relation between the mathematical theory and experimental observation. His papers addressed the question of how quarks combine and how the strong force behaves at short distances, a problem that remained at the frontier of physics.

== Theoretical Physics at Home ==
Zhou Guangzhao returned to China and became a leading figure in the theoretical physics community, working at the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He trained students, organised research, and maintained an active programme during a period when scientific work was often interrupted by political campaigns.

He was one of the founders of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in its modern form and helped to sustain international contact with physicists abroad, even when such contact was difficult. His own work continued on the structure of particles and on the mathematical methods of field theory.

He also took an early interest in the relation between science and the wider society. He wrote and spoke about the conditions that allow discovery to flourish, about the need for open communication among scientists and about the responsibility of the scientific community to the public. These concerns gradually drew him from the laboratory into the administration of research.

== Leadership of Chinese Science ==
In 1987 Zhou Guangzhao was appointed president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a position he held until 1997. He used the office to reform the academy, encouraging competition, the evaluation of research by peer review and the mobility of scientists among institutions. He argued that Chinese science needed to move closer to international standards.

He supported large national projects, including the development of synchrotron radiation facilities and the strengthening of basic research in mathematics and the physical sciences. He was a persistent advocate for investment in science and education, and he took part in the formulation of national science policy at the highest level.

He served as a vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and as a leading figure in Chinese scientific organisations, and he was widely consulted on questions of technology and development. His administration of science was marked by a reformist temper and by a conviction that institutions must be made to serve creativity rather than bureaucracy.

== Influence and Legacy ==
Zhou Guangzhao combined the career of a working theoretical physicist with that of a national scientific statesman. He was elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and to the World Academy of Sciences, and he received numerous honours both at home and abroad, including recognition for his contributions to the understanding of the strong interaction.

As president of the academy he left a lasting mark on the organisation of research in China, promoting the idea that scientists should compete for support on the basis of merit and that institutions should be accountable to the wider community. Many of the reforms he introduced were continued by his successors and shaped the modern landscape of Chinese research.

He died on 17 August 2024 in Beijing at the age of ninety-five. He is remembered as a physicist of real intellectual distinction and as a leader who understood that the health of science depends on freedom of inquiry, on rigorous evaluation and on the steady support of the state.
