'''Zhao Zhongyao''' a Chinese experimental physicist of the twentieth century (1902-1998) who was among the first to observe the scattering of gamma rays by electrons and who played a leading role in founding China's research in accelerator physics and cosmic rays.

== Early Life and Education ==
Zhao Zhongyao was born on 27 May 1902 in Danyang, in Jiangsu province. He showed an early interest in science and studied physics at Nanjing Higher Normal School and then at National Southeastern University, where he received a solid grounding in the experimental tradition. He was a careful and patient worker, qualities that would define his later research.

In 1927 he travelled to the United States and entered the California Institute of Technology, then one of the world's leading centres of physics and a place of rapid innovation. He worked under several prominent experimentalists and learned the techniques of precision measurement that were being applied to the new questions of nuclear and radiation physics.

He completed his doctoral work at the California Institute of Technology in 1930. His thesis concerned the scattering of high-energy gamma rays, and it produced a result of lasting importance to the understanding of how radiation interacts with matter. He thus became one of the first Chinese physicists to make a mark in the international research community.

== The Scattering of Gamma Rays ==
In the late 1920s physicists were striving to understand how X-rays and gamma rays are absorbed and scattered. The American physicist Arthur Compton had shown that X-rays scattered by electrons shift in wavelength, the celebrated Compton effect, and the question arose whether the same behaviour occurred with the much more energetic gamma rays produced in radioactive decay.

Zhao Zhongyao carried out careful experiments on the scattering of hard gamma rays by light elements and found that the wavelength of the scattered radiation was longer than that of the incident radiation. This demonstrated that gamma rays were indeed scattered by electrons in a manner analogous to the Compton effect, extending the phenomenon to the highest energies then available.

His measurement of the magnitude of this shift provided an important test of the theory of quantum electrodynamics and became a standard reference in the field. The result is known in the literature as one of the earliest confirmations of the Compton scattering of gamma rays, and it established Zhao's reputation as a meticulous experimenter at a very early stage of his career.

== Return to China and Cosmic Rays ==
Zhao Zhongyao returned to China in 1931, at a time when the country had almost no facilities for advanced research. He taught at several universities and struggled to build experimental equipment from very limited means, at one point constructing a cloud chamber with local materials. Despite the poverty of the institutions, he persisted in research on cosmic rays.

With his student He Zehui, whom he later married, he carried out studies of cosmic-ray showers and of the penetrating radiation reaching the earth from space. Their work in the 1940s, conducted in military and scientific centres of the interior, produced some of the first Chinese contributions to high-energy physics and helped to train a research community in the most difficult circumstances.

He also worked on the development of nuclear emulsions and on methods of detecting and measuring particles, techniques that were essential to cosmic-ray research. His insistence on designing and building apparatus within China, rather than relying wholly on imported equipment, left a tradition of experimental self-reliance that influenced his successors.

== Building Accelerator Physics in China ==
After the founding of the People's Republic, Zhao Zhongyao became a central figure in the construction of China's research infrastructure. He was among the strongest advocates of building a particle accelerator, arguing that the study of nuclear physics required machines capable of producing high-energy particles rather than a reliance on natural sources alone.

He took part in the planning of the country's first large accelerator facilities and led research groups devoted to the acceleration and detection of particles. He directed the Institute of High Energy Physics at its creation and helped to define its scientific programme, which combined work on accelerators with experimental particle physics and the training of young researchers.

He was also involved in the broader organisation of nuclear science, and he took part in the early studies that preceded the weapons programme. His laboratory became a training ground for many of the physicists who would later work on both peaceful and defence applications, and he was widely respected for his technical judgement and generosity toward younger colleagues.

== Influence and Legacy ==
Zhao Zhongyao was elected a founding member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1955, and he served the scientific community in many capacities over the following decades. He was honoured for his contributions to experimental physics and for his role in establishing the field in China, and his work influenced the direction of cosmic-ray and accelerator research for a generation.

His scientific papers, particularly those of the early 1930s on the scattering of gamma rays, remain part of the record of the development of quantum electrodynamics. His later work laid foundations rather than completed monuments, but the institutions he helped to build grew into the centres of Chinese high-energy physics.

He died on 28 May 1998 in Beijing at the age of ninety-six, having witnessed almost the entire history of modern physics in China. He is remembered as a pioneer who brought rigorous experimental method back to a country that lacked it, and as a teacher who transmitted that method to those who followed.
