'''Yuan Longping''' the Chinese agronomist known as the father of hybrid rice (1930-2021), whose development of high-yielding hybrid rice varieties helped to raise food production across China and much of Asia and earned him comparison with the great agricultural innovators of the modern world.

== Early Life and Education ==
Yuan Longping was born on 7 September 1930 in Beijing, the son of a railroad official, but the family's roots lay in De'an county, Jiangxi province. He grew up during years of war and dislocation, moving with his family as the conflict with Japan and then the civil war disrupted the country, and attended schools in several cities.

He enrolled at the Southwest Agricultural College in Chongqing, graduating in 1953, and took up a teaching post at an agricultural school in Anjiang, in the remote western hills of Hunan province. There he taught crop science for many years, and he later recalled a famine in the late 1950s that convinced him his life's work must be the increase of food production.

Living among farmers in a poor upland region, he saw at first hand how a failed harvest could mean hunger and death. The conviction that food security was the foundation of everything else shaped the rest of his career, and he committed himself to plant breeding at a time when conditions in China made such research unusually difficult.

== The Pursuit of Hybrid Rice ==
In the 1960s Yuan Longping became interested in the possibility of hybrid rice. Rice is largely self-pollinating, and many agronomists then doubted that a commercially useful hybrid could be produced, since the plant fertilises itself before cross-pollination can occur. He reasoned that if a male-sterile plant could be found, crossing would become possible on a large scale.

Working with a small team, he searched the rice-growing regions for naturally occurring male-sterile plants. In 1970 the crucial discovery was made in Hainan, when a specimen of a wild rice species growing by a roadside was found to be male-sterile. This wild plant, together with cultivated varieties, provided the genetic material for the first workable hybrid system.

After years of painstaking breeding and field trials, the team produced a hybrid combination that combined high yield with the desirable qualities of cultivated rice. The new varieties were released in 1976, and their cultivation spread rapidly. Yields on the same land rose substantially, and the technology was soon adopted in other Asian countries.

== Scientific Achievement and Its Impact ==
The basic method depended on a three-line system in which a sterile line, a maintainer line and a restorer line were bred and crossed in a controlled sequence, so that farmers could sow seed that reliably produced a vigorous hybrid crop. This system, difficult to establish and to maintain, laid the foundation of the hybrid rice industry.

Hybrid rice spread across China and was planted on millions of hectares, contributing greatly to the growth of the national grain harvest and to the reduction of hunger. Yuan Longping's work is widely credited with helping to feed a population that grew enormously in the second half of the twentieth century, at a time when farmland was scarce.

He continued to improve the technology. Later research moved toward a two-line system that avoided some of the complexities of the earlier method, and toward super-high-yielding varieties bred to combine yield with resistance to disease and pests. His team also worked to extend the method to other crops and to harsher environments.

== Recognition and Influence ==
Yuan Longping received many honours at home and abroad. He was elected to the Chinese Academy of Engineering and was honoured by the state with the highest science and technology award and, in 2019, the Medal of the Republic. Foreign academies and institutions recognised his work, and he was often described as the father of hybrid rice.

The spread of hybrid rice beyond China, into countries such as India, Vietnam, the Philippines, Bangladesh and parts of Africa, carried his influence across the developing world. International agricultural research centres collaborated with him, and his methods shaped the training of a generation of plant breeders in Asia.

He was known for a plain style and a preference for fieldwork over ceremony, working into his old age among the experimental plots. He travelled widely to advise on food production, and his reputation rested on the practical outcome of his science rather than on theoretical novelty, a fact that he himself emphasised.

== Later Years and Legacy ==
Yuan Longping remained active in research and in public life into his nineties. He spoke about the challenge of feeding a growing world population and called for continued investment in agricultural science, and he urged scientists to work on problems of food security with the same seriousness given to other great endeavours.

He died on 22 May 2021 in Changsha, Hunan, at the age of ninety. In the days that followed, large crowds gathered spontaneously to mourn him across the country, an outpouring that revealed the depth of the public gratitude he had earned. Flags flew at half mast, and tributes came from around the world.

His legacy lies in the fields that feed hundreds of millions of people and in the research institutions and breeding programmes he inspired. He is remembered as a scientist who turned an unpromising technical question into a practical answer for the poor, and as the man whose rice helped to secure the food supply of a nation.
