'''Xian Xinghai''' the Chinese composer of the twentieth century (1905-1945) who is celebrated as the author of the Yellow River Cantata, one of the best known works of modern Chinese music. His short life was devoted to the creation of a national music that could speak to the masses, and his name became a symbol of patriotic art.

== Early Life and Studies ==
Xian Xinghai was born on 13 June 1905 in Macau, into a poor fishing family of Cantonese origin, and grew up in Singapore and Guangzhou. His father died before his birth, and he was raised by his mother, whose labour and devotion he later acknowledged as the foundation of his education. As a boy he learned traditional instruments and sang in local settings, absorbing the folk music of the South China coast.

He studied music in Guangzhou and then in Beijing and Shanghai, where he supported himself as a teacher and musician. In 1929 he travelled to France and, after considerable hardship, was admitted to the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied composition with Vincent d'Indy and others. During these years he wrote a number of chamber and orchestral works and refined his technique in the Western tradition.

His time in Paris was marked by poverty and by intense application. He is remembered for the struggles of his student years, and the experience deepened his conviction that music should serve a social purpose rather than remain a luxury of the few. He returned to China in 1935 determined to devote his craft to the national cause.

== War, Activism and the Yellow River Cantata ==
After his return Xian Xinghai threw himself into the cultural life of the resistance against Japanese invasion. He composed songs and film music in Shanghai and later worked in Wuhan, where he led mass singing movements that brought patriotic songs to soldiers and civilians alike. He believed that music could mobilise and unite a people under threat, and he wrote for the voices of ordinary men and women.

In 1939 he travelled to Yan'an and taught at the Lu Xun Academy of Arts. There, in a burst of creative energy, he composed the Yellow River Cantata, a large choral and orchestral work setting poems by the poet Guang Weiran. The cantata evokes the river as a symbol of the nation, its boatmen, its sorrow and its determination to resist, and it was performed soon after its completion with enormous effect.

The cantata became the most famous work of Chinese choral music of the century. Its melodies combine folk elements with strong march-like rhythms, and its scale and emotional range gave Chinese audiences a powerful new model of patriotic art. It was later arranged as a piano concerto, a form in which it reached an even wider international audience.

== The Moscow Period and Later Works ==
In 1940 Xian Xinghai was sent to the Soviet Union to work on film and documentary projects. The German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 and the shifting circumstances of the war left him stranded far from home. He spent the last years of his life in Moscow, Kazakhstan and other parts of the Soviet Union, in poor health and difficult material conditions.

During this period he continued to compose, producing orchestral works and the symphonic suite based on the Yellow River material, as well as pieces reflecting the landscapes and peoples among whom he lived. Among his works of these years are symphonies and a suite inspired by the folk music of Central Asia, showing his continuing curiosity about the musical traditions he encountered.

His health, never robust, deteriorated under the strain of poverty, illness and displacement. He contracted tuberculosis and was nursed by friends in a sanatorium near Alma-Ata. He died on 30 October 1945 in Moscow at the age of forty, far from his family and his country, before he could return home to the peace he had helped to imagine.

== Musical Style and Range ==
Xian Xinghai's style is marked by a gift for melody and by his skill in writing for massed voices. His songs and cantatas make use of simple, memorable tunes that audiences could learn quickly, yet they are supported by harmonies and textures that reveal his conservatory training. This combination of accessibility and craftsmanship was central to his success.

He wrote in a wide range of genres, including solo songs, choral works, film scores, symphonies and chamber pieces. His output was unusually large for so short a life, and much of it was produced under conditions of war and displacement. Even his unfinished works show an ambitious conception of what a Chinese symphonic tradition might become.

He was also a thinker and writer about music, arguing that Chinese composers must study both their own folk heritage and the achievements of Western music in order to create something new. His essays and his teaching in Yan'an influenced the direction of music policy and education in the following decades, and his ideas about the social role of the artist were widely repeated.

== Influence and Legacy ==
Xian Xinghai is honoured in China as the people's composer, and the Yellow River Cantata is among the most frequently performed works in the national repertoire. His image has appeared on postage stamps and currency, and a conservatory in Guangzhou and numerous prizes bear his name. He became an emblem of artistic service to the nation.

His influence extends beyond his own works. As a teacher and model he helped to establish the expectation that Chinese composers should engage with the life of the people and with the musical traditions of their regions. The composers who followed him inherited both his melodic idiom and his sense of social purpose.

He died young and in exile, and the pathos of his fate deepened the esteem in which he was held. He is remembered as one of the founders of modern Chinese music, a musician whose brief career produced a work of enduring power and whose ideals continued to shape the art of his country long after his death.
