'''Sima Guang''' the Chinese historian, statesman and scholar of the Northern Song dynasty (1019-1086) who compiled the Zizhi Tongjian, the monumental chronicle of Chinese history, and who led the conservative opposition to the reforms of Wang Anshi. He is remembered as one of the greatest historians of imperial China.

== Early Life and Official Career ==
Sima Guang was born in 1019 in Xia county, in the region of Shanxi, the son of a family of officials. A story from his childhood tells that he saved a companion who had fallen into a water jar by breaking the vessel, an episode that became proverbial in China as an example of quick thinking and calm judgement.

He passed the highest examinations at the age of twenty and entered the imperial bureaucracy, where he rose steadily through a series of offices. He served as a censor, as a scholar of the academy and as a governor, and he earned a reputation for strict integrity, plain living and fearless criticism. He was known for refusing to accept gifts and for living more simply than his rank required.

His scholarship made him a leading figure of the intellectual life of the Northern Song. He studied the classics and history, wrote on ritual and philosophy, and cultivated the friendship of the great scholars of the age. His breadth of learning and his moral seriousness prepared him for the two tasks that would define his life: the writing of history and the conduct of government.

== The Zizhi Tongjian ==
Sima Guang's greatest achievement is the Zizhi Tongjian, the Comprehensive Mirror for Aid in Government, a vast chronological history of China from the Warring States period to the founding of the Song. He was assisted by a team of scholars, and the work was presented to the throne in 1084 after roughly nineteen years of labour.

The title expresses its purpose: it was a mirror in which rulers might examine the successes and failures of the past. The chronicle is organised year by year and, within each year, item by item, drawing on a huge range of earlier sources that were carefully weighed and often quoted in full. Sima Guang appended critical notes explaining why he preferred one account over another.

The work covers some thirteen centuries and remains one of the foundational sources for the study of Chinese history. Its method of collecting and comparing variant records, and its insistence on drawing moral lessons from political events, set a standard that later historians followed. It established Sima Guang's name as the foremost historian of his age.

== The Opposition to Wang Anshi ==
In the 1060s and 1070s the young emperor Shenzong appointed Wang Anshi to carry out a sweeping programme of reform. The New Policies included state loans to farmers, new taxes, a reorganisation of the militia and a remodelling of the examinations, all designed to strengthen the state and relieve the peasantry.

Sima Guang became the leading spokesman of the conservative opposition. He argued that the reforms were too rapid, that they burdened the people with the very schemes meant to help them, and that they placed excessive power in the hands of the central government. He defended the older institutions and the moral authority of the classical tradition against the claims of administrative efficiency.

The conflict between the two camps divided the court for a generation. Sima Guang withdrew from active office for a time and devoted himself to scholarship, but he retained the esteem of the emperor and the favour of the empress dowager. He returned to power after Shenzong's death, and he worked energetically to undo the New Policies before his own death in 1086.

== Statesmanship and Character ==
Sima Guang's political career was marked by a severity of principle that inspired both respect and exasperation. He was frugal, sober and scrupulous, and he refused to compromise over what he regarded as matters of right and wrong. Even his critics acknowledged his honesty and the simplicity of his personal life.

As a minister he advocated the reform of the examination system and the improvement of the civil service, and he was concerned with the conditions of the common people. He believed that good government depended less on clever institutions than on the virtue and diligence of the men who administered them, a conviction that set him against the mechanistic approach of his rivals.

His letters and memorials are admired for their clarity and their moral force, and his conduct was held up in later ages as an example of the official who speaks the truth regardless of the cost. He was also a devoted scholar who brought to government the same patience and thoroughness that he applied to history.

== Influence and Legacy ==
The Zizhi Tongjian stands at the centre of the Chinese historical tradition. It was the model for later chronicles and for the great encyclopedic compilations of the imperial age, and it remains indispensable to historians of China. Its method of critical comparison of sources and its ideal of history as a guide to government influenced scholars far beyond its own time and country.

Sima Guang's contest with Wang Anshi became a defining episode in Chinese political thought, cited in later centuries whenever the merits of reform and conservatism were debated. Writers across East Asia drew lessons from it about the dangers of haste and the value of continuity, and the two men came to represent two enduring visions of government.

He died in 1086, soon after his return to power, and was honoured posthumously with high titles. His tomb and his memory were venerated, and the phrase the mirror for aid in government entered the language as an image of history's use to rulers. He is remembered as the historian who placed scholarship in the service of the state.
