'''Roger Bannister''' the British middle-distance runner and neurologist (1929-2018) who in 1954 became the first person to run a mile in under four minutes, a feat that had been regarded as beyond human capacity. He combined an outstanding athletic career with a distinguished medical career, and his achievement remains one of the most famous moments in the history of sport.

== Early Life and Education ==
Roger Gilbert Bannister was born in Harrow, in the north-west of London, and was educated at a preparatory school and then at Oxford University, where he studied medicine. He was not regarded as a natural athlete as a child and took up running as a means of overcoming his lack of aptitude at ball games. Under the guidance of a coach he developed into a promising middle-distance runner.

His medical studies took priority over his training, and he famously prepared for races during brief breaks from clinical work, running at lunchtime and in the evenings. This limited his training volume, and he compensated with careful attention to technique, pace judgment and the physiological reasoning that his medical knowledge suggested.

His undergraduate years established him as one of Britain's best milers. He competed in the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, where he finished fourth in the 1500 metres, a disappointment that persuaded him to set himself a more ambitious goal before he retired from the sport.

== The Four-Minute Mile ==
For decades athletes and physiologists had debated whether the human body could run a mile in under four minutes, and some believed the barrier to be absolute. Bannister trained through the winter of 1953 and the spring of 1954 with the specific aim of breaking it, using interval training and a carefully planned attempt at a pace he had worked out in advance.

On 6 May 1954, at the Iffley Road track in Oxford, in windy and uncertain conditions, Bannister ran the mile in 3 minutes 59.4 seconds, with the help of pacemakers Chris Brasher and Chris Chataway. The wind dropped as the attempt began, and the announcer's first word merely reported that the time was a new record before he completed the sentence to reveal that it was under four minutes.

The news travelled around the world and made Bannister an international celebrity. The barrier that had seemed unbreakable was broken within weeks by the Australian runner John Landy, and the four-minute mile thereafter became a standard achievement for elite middle-distance runners, but the first man to accomplish it retained a unique place in sporting history.

== Medical Career ==
Bannister qualified as a doctor at St Mary's Hospital Medical School in London and built a distinguished career in neurology after retiring from competitive running in 1954. He trained at Oxford and elsewhere, working on disorders of the nervous system and on the physiology of exercise, and he became a consultant physician and clinical researcher.

He wrote a widely read paper on the physiology of the four-minute mile, analysing the oxygen consumption and mechanical efficiency required, and he pursued research into the autonomic nervous system and the control of blood pressure. He also spent time as a researcher at Oxford, where he studied the involuntary regulation of the circulation and the effects of exercise.

In later life he served as a consultant at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London and as a trustee and director of several medical institutions. He was knighted for his contributions to medicine and sports, and he regarded his clinical work as the more important part of his life.

== Later Life and Sports Administration ==
Bannister remained closely involved in athletics after his retirement as a runner. He served as president of the Amateur Athletic Association and helped to shape the governance of British and international sport during a period of rapid change, when amateur ideals gave way to professional and commercial structures.

He also campaigned against the use of performance-enhancing drugs in sport, arguing from his medical background that the practice endangered the health of athletes and corrupted the meaning of competition. He chaired an early anti-doping committee and warned repeatedly of the dangers of stimulants and hormones.

He wrote books and articles about running and medicine, and he gave interviews about the four-minute mile throughout his life. He was a patron of charities connected with neurology and sport, and he lived quietly in Oxford with his wife and family until his death in 2018.

== Influence and Legacy ==
Bannister's mile is remembered as one of the great moments of twentieth-century sport, celebrated not only for its speed but for the way it demonstrated the malleability of limits that had been thought absolute. It encouraged athletes to question other barriers and became a classic example of the psychological dimension of sporting achievement.

He is also remembered as a model of the amateur ideal, an athlete who competed for the love of the sport while pursuing a demanding professional career, and who ranked his medical work above his fame. His example illustrates the possibility of combining intellectual and physical excellence in a single life.

Tributes after his death emphasised both his athletic feat and his medical service, and the four-minute mile remains part of the vocabulary of sport. His achievement has been commemorated in books, films and public monuments, and runners still speak of breaking the barrier as an ambition that began with him.
