'''Qiu Shaoyun''' a Chinese soldier of the People's Volunteer Army (1926-1952) who died while holding his position in an ambush during the Korean War, remaining motionless under enemy incendiary fire in order to avoid revealing the concealed unit, and who is honoured as a national martyr for discipline and self-restraint.

== Early Life ==
Qiu Shaoyun was born in 1926 into a tenant-farming family in Shaoyun village, Tongliang county, Sichuan province. His father worked another man's land, and the household lived close to the margin of subsistence, buffeted by rent, taxes and the uncertainties of the harvest. His mother died when he was young, and he was brought up in difficult conditions among the rural poor.

As a boy he hired himself out as a farm hand and a hired labourer, work that hardened him and gave him an intimate knowledge of the fields and hills of his region. He had almost no schooling and remained illiterate for much of his youth, but he was remembered as steady, patient and physically robust, and he earned a reputation for keeping his word.

After 1949 he took part in the peasant associations of the new order, and he joined the militia. When volunteers were sought for the army during the Korean War he enlisted, entering the People's Liberation Army in 1951 and receiving rudimentary training before being sent to the front with a unit of the People's Volunteers.

== Service and the Ambush ==
Qiu Shaoyun was assigned to the 87th Regiment of the 29th Division of the 15th Army Corps, the same corps that fought at Shangganling. In 1952 his unit was deployed to the central front, where the opposing armies faced one another across a ridge of low heights. The Chinese forces prepared an attack on a hill held by the enemy and planned to move a large force into hiding close to the position the night before the assault.

The plan required hundreds of soldiers to lie concealed in a patch of tall grass and low brush just forward of the enemy wire, hidden through the hours of darkness and the following day until the signal to attack. Discovery of the position would have exposed the whole force to concentrated artillery and machine-gun fire, so the strictest silence and stillness were imposed on every man.

During the night of 11 October 1952 an enemy patrol fired incendiary rounds, and the dry vegetation around Qiu Shaoyun caught fire. He was alone at the forward edge of the hiding line, closest to the enemy. Though the flames reached his clothing and burned his body, he did not cry out, move or roll away, because any movement would have betrayed the position of his hundreds of comrades.

== Death ==
Qiu Shaoyun died in the early hours of 12 October 1952, burned to death where he lay rather than reveal the ambush. When the attack was launched the following day, the unit was able to achieve surprise, and his action was credited with contributing to the success of the operation. He was twenty-six years old, and he had never married.

Fellow soldiers later described how they had seen him endure without a sound, and the story spread through the army and the country as an example of perfect discipline. His body was found unmarked by any sign that he had tried to save himself, and the account emphasised that he had clutched the earth and held his place to the last.

He was posthumously awarded the title of special-class combat hero and a first-class merit, and he was enrolled as a model member of the Communist Party. A memorial was built at the place where he died, and his name was given to schools and units, becoming one of the select company of martyr-heroes that the state commemorates.

== Honours and Remembrance ==
A memorial park and statue were established in his native Tongliang, and the site of his death in Korea was marked. Each year delegations of students, soldiers and officials visit the memorial hall, which displays relics, photographs and documents connected with his life. His birthday is remembered in local commemorations, and his story is taught throughout the school system.

His name was attached to an elementary school and to military units, and his portrait appeared on stamps and in the pages of textbooks. In 2009 he was named among the national heroes and exemplary figures honoured on the sixtieth anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic, a list that gathered the most revered martyrs and builders of the modern state.

The commemorations around Qiu Shaoyun emphasised not spectacular daring but restraint, obedience and the subordination of self to the group. He became the emblem of the disciplined soldier who follows orders unto death, and his story supplied a moral lesson about collective survival in the most testing circumstances of war.

== Legacy and Significance ==
Qiu Shaoyun and Huang Jiguang, both of the same army corps and both commemorated for sacrifice in Korea, were paired in official accounts as twin exemplars of courage and discipline. Their stories were used to teach soldiers the value of obedience and the meaning of military honour, and they entered the common vocabulary of the army as standards against which conduct was measured.

The Korean War itself was fought at great cost and ended in an armistice rather than a settlement, and its memory in China is bound up with the sacrifice of soldiers like Qiu Shaoyun. The hero cult that grew around him reflected the effort of a young state to forge a common identity through shared stories of devotion and endurance.

His memorial remains a place of pilgrimage for patriotic education, and his name continues to stand for the idea that the individual can be asked to give everything for the community. In the long record of Chinese military martyrs, Qiu Shaoyun occupies a singular place as the soldier who kept absolutely still.
