'''Pan Tianshou''' a Chinese painter and art educator of the twentieth century (1897-1971) whose monumental bird-and-flower and landscape paintings renewed the tradition of literati ink painting and who served as president of the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. He combined bold, calligraphic brushwork with a personal sense of scale and design, and he trained many of the leading painters of modern China.

== Early Life and Training ==
Pan Tianshou was born on 14 March 1897 in Ninghai, a town in Zhejiang province on the eastern coast of China, into a family of modest means. His father was a schoolteacher and a farmer who encouraged the boy's early aptitude for drawing, and as a child he copied the illustrations in popular novels and the woodblock prints that circulated in his region. The rural landscape of hills, water and groves in which he grew up became a deep reservoir of imagery for his later work.

He received a classical education in the Chinese written language and studied the Confucian classics before entering the Hangzhou Provincial First Normal School, where he came under the guidance of the painter and reformer Li Shutong. From Li he learned the disciplines of figure drawing and Western methods of observation, and he discovered the writings of the seventeenth-century individualist painters whose forceful brushwork and unconventional compositions shaped his ambitions.

After graduating he taught in schools across Zhejiang and Jiangsu, supporting himself by teaching while he continued to study the masters of the Ming and Qing dynasties. He copied the works of Xu Wei, Bada Shanren and Shitao, absorbing their expressive use of ink and their insistence that a painting should disclose the temperament of the artist rather than merely record appearances.

== Career as Painter and Teacher ==
In 1923 Pan Tianshou joined the faculty of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts and began to move in the circle of artists and writers who gathered in that cosmopolitan city. He exhibited regularly and formed lasting friendships with other painters who sought to reform Chinese art without abandoning its traditions. His reputation grew through his teaching, his essays on painting and his participation in the intellectual debates of the period.

In 1928 he was invited to help establish the National Academy of Art in Hangzhou, where he taught for many years and became one of its most influential professors. He insisted that students master calligraphy and the classical tradition before experimenting with modern idioms, and he argued that innovation must grow from a thorough understanding of the past rather than from imitation of foreign models.

After the founding of the People's Republic in 1949 he was appointed president of the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, later renamed the China Academy of Art, and he devoted himself to rebuilding art education in the new state. He travelled, lectured and painted on a grand scale, and he supervised the training of a generation of artists who would carry his methods into the following decades.

== Artistic Style and Technique ==
Pan Tianshou is best known for large-scale bird-and-flower paintings and for landscapes built from powerful, vertical compositions. He used a brush charged with dark ink, laying down strokes of great economy and force, then adding accents of colour or washes that give depth and atmosphere. His forms are simplified and monumental, often filling the picture surface in a way that recalls the monumental screens of earlier centuries.

He was a master of the tension between positive and negative space. Vast areas of unpainted paper become clouds, water or sky, while a few rocks, pines or birds anchor the composition. This bold use of emptiness, together with the angular strength of his brushwork, gave his paintings a modern sense of design while remaining deeply rooted in the literati tradition of expressive ink painting.

His calligraphy was equally distinctive, and he regarded writing and painting as a single art. The energy of his cursive and running scripts entered his brushwork, giving his lines a rhythm that is at once deliberate and spontaneous. Critics have described his mature style as austere, commanding and slightly forbidding, an art of concentrated strength rather than of decorative charm.

== Writings and Educational Thought ==
Pan Tianshou wrote extensively on the theory and history of Chinese painting, and his essays collected in books such as Pan Tianshou's Talks on Art became standard reading for students. He distinguished between the outward appearance of natural things and the inner structure that a painter must grasp, and he argued that a serious artist studies nature in order to transform it rather than to copy it.

He held that instruction must be rigorous and systematic, that a student should copy from the old masters, then from life, and only then seek an individual manner. He rejected the idea that tradition and modernity were opposed, maintaining that the greatest innovators in Chinese art had always been its most devoted students of the past.

His educational philosophy shaped the curriculum of the academies where he taught, and it influenced the way Chinese painting was taught throughout the country. He treated technique and character as inseparable, insisting that the cultivation of the artist's mind and moral seriousness was as important as the mastery of the brush.

== Late Years, Influence and Legacy ==
In the political campaigns of the 1960s Pan Tianshou came under harsh criticism, and during the Cultural Revolution he was publicly denounced and subjected to humiliation and ill treatment. He died on 5 September 1971 in Hangzhou. His reputation was fully restored after 1976, and a museum and memorial were established in his honour.

His students and followers became leading figures in the teaching and practice of Chinese painting, and his monumental style had a lasting effect on how later painters conceived the possibilities of ink. Exhibitions of his work in China and abroad have secured his standing as one of the pre-eminent masters of twentieth-century Chinese art.

He is remembered as both a conservative and a modernist, a painter who defended the classical tradition precisely because he saw within it the resources for renewal. His combination of scholarship, moral seriousness and bold pictorial invention makes him a central figure in the story of modern Chinese painting.
