'''Net exports''' are the value of a country's exports of goods and services minus the value of its imports. Net exports are a component of gross domestic product and a key indicator of a country's trade position. A positive value indicates a trade surplus, meaning the country exports more than it imports; a negative value indicates a trade deficit. Net exports link the domestic economy to the rest of the world and are closely related to the current account and to capital flows.

== Components of GDP ==

In the expenditure approach to GDP, output equals consumption plus investment plus government spending plus net exports. Net exports capture the contribution of the external sector to aggregate demand. Because imports are subtracted, a rise in imports reduces net exports and, other things equal, GDP, but a rise in imports may also reflect stronger domestic demand. Exports add to demand, while imports represent spending that leaks abroad.

Net exports are affected by income, relative prices, the exchange rate, and trade policy. Strong foreign growth raises export demand, while strong domestic growth raises imports and reduces net exports. A depreciation makes exports cheaper and imports dearer, improving net exports after the J-curve adjustment. Tariffs and quotas alter trade flows directly.

== Relation to capital flows ==

Net exports are linked to international capital flows through the balance-of-payments identity. A trade surplus means that a country is exporting more than it imports and is therefore acquiring foreign assets or reducing external liabilities. A trade deficit means the country is importing more than it exports and is financing the gap by selling assets or borrowing abroad. Net exports therefore equal the net capital outflow, with sign conventions accounting for income and transfers.

This linkage implies that trade imbalances and capital flows are two sides of the same coin. A country with a large trade deficit is, by identity, a net importer of capital, and its external liabilities grow relative to its income. Conversely, a trade surplus country accumulates foreign assets. Understanding this relationship is essential for interpreting external imbalances and for assessing their sustainability.

== Determinants and adjustment ==

Net exports are determined by competitiveness, which depends on unit labour costs, productivity, quality, and the exchange rate; by foreign and domestic income; and by trade barriers and preferences. Over the long run, a country's net export position reflects its saving and investment behaviour, since the external balance equals the difference between national saving and investment.

Adjustment of large net export imbalances involves changes in relative prices, income, and exchange rates, as well as structural reform. Surplus countries may need to raise domestic demand, while deficit countries may need to reduce absorption or improve competitiveness. The adjustment process can be slow and can generate tensions among trading partners, particularly when imbalances are large and persistent.

== Measurement and interpretation ==

Net exports are measured in the balance of payments and in national accounts. Bilateral trade balances, which compare exports and imports with a single partner, are often cited in policy debates but can be misleading, because they ignore the role of global value chains and the fact that a country's overall position is what matters for its external balance. A bilateral deficit may reflect the structure of supply chains rather than unfair trade practices.

In real terms, net exports can improve even when the nominal trade balance is unchanged, if the terms of trade change. Analysts therefore examine both nominal and real measures, and they consider the composition of trade, including the share of intermediate goods and services. These details matter for understanding the sources of external imbalance and for designing appropriate policy responses.

== The trade balance over the long run ==

In the long run, a country's net export position reflects its saving and investment behaviour. A country that saves more than it invests exports capital and runs a surplus, while a country that invests more than it saves imports capital and runs a deficit. This identity implies that persistent imbalances are rooted in domestic macroeconomic conditions, including fiscal policy, private saving, and investment, rather than solely in trade policy.

The relationship between the fiscal balance and the trade balance, known as the twin deficits, has been studied extensively. In theory, a larger fiscal deficit raises domestic absorption and the demand for imports, widening the trade deficit. The empirical evidence is mixed, since other factors, including private saving and investment, also affect the external balance, and the relationship varies across countries and over time.

== Trade in services and value added ==

Traditional measures of net exports focus on gross trade in goods and services. In an era of global value chains, gross trade can misrepresent the contribution of trade to an economy, because exports embody imported inputs. Measures of trade in value added, which attribute the value created at each stage of production to the country where it occurs, provide a more accurate picture of the domestic content of exports and of the contribution of trade to GDP.

Services trade has grown in importance and is often less visible than goods trade. Services are increasingly tradable, thanks to digital technologies, and they contribute to net exports through tourism, transport, finance, and business services. Measuring services trade is difficult, and the balance in services can differ substantially from the balance in goods, which matters for understanding a country's overall external position.

== Policy implications ==

Policies to influence net exports include exchange-rate policy, trade policy, and macroeconomic measures. Exchange-rate depreciation improves competitiveness but may be offset by the J-curve and by retaliation. Tariffs and quotas can reduce imports but also raise costs for domestic producers and consumers, and they invite countermeasures. Macroeconomic policy affects net exports indirectly, through its effects on domestic demand and on the exchange rate.

Because net exports are linked to capital flows, policies that attract or deter foreign investment also affect the external balance. Countries that rely heavily on foreign capital to finance investment tend to run deficits, while those that export capital tend to run surpluses. Understanding these linkages is essential for coherent policy and for the assessment of external sustainability.
