'''Margaret Hamilton''' the American computer scientist and systems engineer (born 1936) who led the software team that developed the flight software for the Apollo spacecraft. Her work helped to make the crewed lunar landings possible, and she popularized the term software engineering to describe the discipline she helped to establish as a rigorous branch of engineering.

== Early Life and Education ==
Margaret Heafield was born on 17 August 1936 in Paoli, Indiana, and grew up in Michigan and Indiana, the daughter of a philosopher and a teacher. She studied mathematics at Earlham College, where she graduated in 1958, and she married James Cox Hamilton soon afterwards. She planned to pursue graduate work in mathematics at Brandeis University but took a temporary position at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to support her husband's studies, and the work absorbed her.

At MIT she joined the laboratory of Edward Lorenz and wrote software for weather prediction on the PDP-1 computer, and she later worked on the SAGE air-defence system, where she wrote software for radar tracking. These early experiences taught her that programming could be a systematic engineering activity, and she began to develop the practices of planning, documentation and testing that would mark her later career.

== The Apollo Guidance Computer ==
In 1961 Hamilton joined the Instrumentation Laboratory at MIT, later the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory, which had the contract to build the guidance and navigation computer for the Apollo spacecraft. She became the director of the software engineering division and led the team that wrote the onboard flight software for both the command module and the lunar module. The programs had to operate in real time on a machine with extremely limited memory, and she designed the routines that guided navigation, controlled the descent, and responded to astronaut commands.

The software she directed prioritized tasks and could recover from errors by shedding lower-priority work to keep the most critical functions running. This design proved decisive during the Apollo 11 landing in 1969, when the computer was flooded with extra data from a rendezvous radar left in the wrong mode. The software detected the overload and restarted the highest-priority tasks, allowing the landing to proceed. The episode became a celebrated demonstration of robust software design.

== Software Engineering as a Discipline ==
Hamilton coined the phrase software engineering to convey that the creation of computer programs deserved the same seriousness, standards and discipline as the older branches of engineering. At the time, software was often treated as an afterthought, written hastily and without documentation. She insisted on treating it as a rigorous activity with its own methods, and she sought to give the field the recognition and credibility of an established profession.

Her team developed formal approaches to designing, testing and verifying complex programs, including methods for organizing code into modules and for checking that the software matched its specification. She emphasized the importance of error prevention rather than mere error correction, and she argued that reliability had to be designed in from the beginning. These ideas influenced the subsequent development of software engineering as an academic and professional field.

== Later Career and Business ==
After the Apollo programme Hamilton continued to work on software for the Skylab space station and for other projects, and she founded a company, Higher Order Software, in 1976 to develop tools and methods for building reliable systems. She later founded Hamilton Technologies in 1986, where she developed a language and methodology for systems design known by the acronym USE IT, based on a theory of control and systems she had worked out over many years.

She published extensively on software design and reliability and remained active as a consultant and speaker well into her later career. Her approach emphasized the formal modelling of system behaviour and the prevention of errors through disciplined design, themes that remained consistent from her earliest work at MIT to her later company. She is recognized as one of the principal architects of software as an engineering discipline.

== Recognition and Legacy ==
Hamilton received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016 for her work on the Apollo programme, and she was awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation in 2025. A photograph of her standing beside a stack of Apollo guidance software listings, printed on paper and nearly as tall as she was, became one of the iconic images of the space programme and a symbol of the role of software in great engineering achievements.

Her career carried the young field of software from an improvised craft to a recognized discipline. The methods of module design, error checking and priority management that she and her team developed became standard practice, and her insistence that software deserved the prestige of engineering shaped how the profession sees itself. She is remembered as a pioneer whose code safely carried astronauts to the Moon and back.
