'''Hou Baolin''' the Chinese crosstalk performer of the twentieth century (1917-1993) who is widely regarded as the master of the art of xiangsheng, the rapid comic dialogue of northern China. Through his recordings and broadcasts he reached audiences across the country and did more than any other performer to make the form a national entertainment.

== Early Life and Apprenticeship ==
Hou Baolin was born on 17 November 1917 in Beijing into a poor family. His father died when he was very young and the household was left in straitened circumstances, so he was sent out to earn his living as a child. He sold goods in the streets and learned the rhymes and patter of the pedlars, an early training in the rhythms of oral performance that stayed with him all his life.

He was apprenticed to a crosstalk master and entered the hard school of the teahouses and street markets, where a performer had to win and hold a paying audience through sheer skill. He learned the traditional routines, the formal structures of the comedy, and the disciplines of timing and voice control by which the art lives. The poverty of these years gave him a sympathy for ordinary people that informed his humour.

By the 1930s he had begun to make a name for himself in the performance venues of Beijing and Tianjin, the heartland of crosstalk. He worked tirelessly, learning from the established masters and gradually assembling the wide repertoire on which his later fame would rest.

== The Art of Crosstalk ==
Crosstalk is a form of comic dialogue performed by one or two artists, relying on rapid verbal exchange, puns, mimicry, storytelling and satire. It demands extraordinary verbal agility, an accurate sense of timing and the ability to respond to an audience. Hou Baolin mastered all of these, and he was especially admired for the clarity of his enunciation and the precision of his pauses.

He specialised in the long narrative routines, in which a rambling and absurd story builds to a comic climax, as well as in the quick exchanges that display wit and verbal dexterity. He had a remarkable memory for traditional material and an equally remarkable instinct for what would make an audience laugh. His performances were tightly constructed, with every word and pause serving the effect.

He developed the form beyond mere entertainment by giving it social content. He created routines that dealt with the lives, manners and frustrations of ordinary people, gently satirising folly and pretension while avoiding the crude mockery of the less skilled. This combination of technical mastery and humane observation raised the prestige of crosstalk as an art.

== Famous Routines and Innovation ==
Among Hou Baolin's best known routines are comic dialogues that have become part of the common culture of Chinese speakers, quoted and imitated long after their first performances. His pieces range from learned parodies of classical language to affectionate portraits of the streets of Beijing, and they are admired for the density of their invention and the warmth of their humour.

He was a tireless innovator within tradition. While he respected the old routines, he revised and polished them, cutting weak material and sharpening the comic logic, and he created new work that reflected the changing life of the country. He collaborated with his regular partners and with writers, treating the composition of a routine as a serious craft that required revision and rehearsal.

He was among the first crosstalk artists to embrace radio and recording, and he understood how these media could carry the art beyond the teahouse. His broadcasts reached millions who never saw him on stage, and his records became the standard by which later performers measured themselves. In this way he transformed a local entertainment into a national one.

== Status and Public Role ==
After 1949 Hou Baolin was recognised as the leading figure of his art and was given a prominent place in the cultural institutions of the capital. He joined the national performing company and served on cultural bodies, and he was honoured as a master of folk art. This official standing allowed him to secure support for crosstalk and to raise the conditions of its performers.

He worked to organise and formalise the training of crosstalk artists, which had previously depended on the traditional master-apprentice relationship. He supported the establishment of programmes and institutions through which young performers could learn the art, and he taught many students himself. His efforts helped to secure the survival of the form as the old teahouse culture declined.

He also travelled abroad and performed for foreign audiences, presenting crosstalk as a distinctively Chinese comic art. These tours were part of the cultural diplomacy of the period and brought the tradition to listeners who had no knowledge of its language or conventions, relying on translation and on the universality of the comedy.

== Legacy and Reputation ==
The Cultural Revolution interrupted Hou Baolin's career and subjected him to persecution, but he survived to perform again and was rehabilitated with the end of the campaign. In his final years he was honoured as a national treasure, and his recordings were preserved as a central archive of the crosstalk tradition. He died on 20 February 1993 in Beijing.

His influence on crosstalk is comparable to that of a founder. Almost every later performer of the art has studied his recordings, and the routines he polished have become classic texts. He is credited with turning a marginal entertainment of the northern teahouses into a respected national art form with a vast and devoted public.

He is remembered as a master of the spoken word, whose humour was rooted in observation of people and whose technique was the product of decades of disciplined practice. His name is synonymous with the golden age of crosstalk, and his voice continues to be heard wherever Chinese comedy is performed or studied.
