'''Emperor Yang of Sui''' the second and last emperor of the Sui dynasty, who reigned from 604 to 618 and presided over both the greatest achievements and the final collapse of China's short-lived reunification. Energetic and ambitious, he completed the Grand Canal, rebuilt the Great Wall and launched vast campaigns abroad, but the cost of his projects and the failure of his Korean wars drove the empire into rebellion and ruin.

== Early Life and Accession ==
Yang Guang was born in 569, the second son of Yang Jian, the founder of the Sui dynasty, and of the empress Dugu Qieluo. When his father seized the throne from the Northern Zhou in 581 and founded the Sui, Yang Guang was created Prince of Jin and given important military commands while still young. He proved a capable general, and in 589 he led one of the armies that conquered the Chen dynasty of the south, reuniting China after nearly three centuries of division.

As prince he cultivated an image of frugality and virtue to contrast with the extravagance of his elder brother Yang Yong, the heir apparent. Through a careful campaign of persuasion at court, and with the support of influential officials, he secured the deposition of his brother in 600 and was named crown prince in his place. When his father fell ill in 604, Yang Guang took the throne amid suspicions, reported in later histories, that he had hastened the old emperor's death.

He took the reign title Daye, meaning great enterprise, and immediately set about completing the work of unification. He moved the capital to Luoyang and ordered the building of a new eastern capital, and he began reforms of the examinations, the coinage and the systems of taxation that his father had introduced. His early reign gave every sign of a vigorous and capable ruler intent on consolidating the dynasty.

== The Grand Canal and Great Works ==
The most enduring achievement of Emperor Yang's reign was the Grand Canal, a system of waterways linking the political north to the economically productive south. Building on older canals, he ordered the construction of a network that connected Luoyang with the Yangtze delta and with the region around modern Beijing, joining the great rivers of China into a single artery of transport.

The canal allowed grain from the fertile south to be shipped to the capital and the frontier armies, and it bound the newly reunited empire into a single economic system. It became the lifeline of the Tang and Song dynasties and remained in use for centuries, and it is justly counted among the greatest engineering works of the premodern world. Its construction, however, demanded enormous levies of peasant labour and many thousands died.

He also rebuilt sections of the Great Wall in the north, founded schools and libraries, and ordered the compilation of a great collection of books and records of the realm. He travelled the empire in enormous and costly progresses, and he maintained a lavish court. These projects, pursued with relentless haste, consumed the wealth and the manpower that the empire could not easily spare.

== Wars and Foreign Policy ==
Emperor Yang pursued an aggressive foreign policy on all his frontiers. In the south he reasserted Chinese control over the regions beyond the Yangtze and sent envoys to the kingdoms of Southeast Asia. In the north and northwest he campaigned against the Turkic peoples, and he toured the frontier in person to overawe the nomad chieftains and to open the trade routes of Central Asia.

His most disastrous enterprise was the conquest of Goguryeo, one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. Between 612 and 614 he launched three immense expeditions, each with hundreds of thousands of soldiers and vast quantities of supplies. The first ended in catastrophe when the main army was destroyed in 612, and the later campaigns failed or were abandoned amid revolts at home.

The Korean wars drained the treasury, broke the armies and provoked resentment throughout the empire. Conscription, heavy taxation and the endless demand for labour for the canal and the frontier drove peasants into flight and banditry, and the great families of the north began to withdraw their support. The energies that had built the empire were now turned against it.

== Rebellion and Fall ==
From about 611 onward revolts spread across the empire, fed by famine, forced labour and the collapse of authority after the Korean defeats. Warlords and peasant bands rose in the north China plain, and even members of the imperial family and the aristocracy began to plot against the throne. The emperor retreated to the south, to Jiangdu on the Yangtze, leaving the north to its disorder.

In 618, while he lingered at Jiangdu, the emperor's own guards, led by the general Yuwen Huaji, mutinied. He was strangled or forced to take poison, and the Sui dynasty came to an end. In the same year Li Yuan, a northern nobleman and a former Sui general, proclaimed a new dynasty, the Tang, and moved to reunify the country.

Emperor Yang is remembered in the Chinese historical tradition as a tyrant and a symbol of overreach, the ruler whose ambition destroyed his own house. Later historians contrasted him with his father, the frugal founder, and treated the two together as a moral lesson on the rise and fall of dynasties. That verdict has been qualified by modern scholarship, which recognises the lasting value of the canal and the administrative order he left behind.

== Legacy and Historical Assessment ==
The Sui dynasty lasted only about thirty-seven years, yet it shaped the institutions that the Tang would perfect. The reunification of north and south, the Grand Canal, the examination system and the framework of central and local government all took form under the Sui, and the Tang inherited and refined them. Emperor Yang's reign was therefore decisive even though his dynasty failed.

The canal in particular transformed the geography of Chinese power, allowing the north to draw on the wealth of the south and enabling the prosperity of the Tang and Song. Cities along its route grew into great commercial centres, and the movement of grain and goods along it supported the largest urban populations of the medieval world.

Opinion on Emperor Yang has always been divided. The official histories portrayed him as brilliant but profligate, a man of genuine gifts whose lack of restraint exhausted the empire. Modern writers, while acknowledging the cruelty and waste of his projects, also credit him with a vision of a unified and centrally administered state. His reign stands as a striking example of how quickly great works and great ruin can come from the same hand.
