'''Aretha Franklin''' an American singer and songwriter (1942-2018), proclaimed the Queen of Soul for a voice of extraordinary power and emotional range. Her recordings of the late 1960s reshaped popular music and gave the civil rights and feminist movements some of their most resonant anthems.

== Early Life and Church Roots ==
Aretha Louise Franklin was born in 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee, and grew up in Detroit, where her father, the Reverend C. L. Franklin, was one of the most famous preachers in America. She sang in his congregation at the New Bethel Baptist Church and learned the gospel idiom from the singers who passed through his circle, including Mahalia Jackson, Dinah Washington and Sam Cooke.

Her mother left the family when Aretha was a child and died before she was ten, and music became a central part of her life from an early age. She recorded her first gospel material as a teenager, and at eighteen she was taken to New York by her father to pursue a career in popular music. Her early training in the church gave her a vocal foundation that would never leave her.

The household she grew up in was a gathering place for leading figures of gospel and early rhythm and blues, and the young Aretha observed at close hand how a great singer commanded an audience. She learned to play piano by ear and to shape a song to the demands of a congregation, skills that would serve her throughout her career. Her father's own charisma and oratory also taught her the power of a voice addressing a crowd.

== Breakthrough and the Soul Recordings ==
Franklin signed with Columbia Records and made several albums that failed to find her true voice, presenting her in settings too polite for her gifts. In 1967 she moved to Atlantic Records and began working with the producer Jerry Wexler, who understood that her church musicianship should be placed at the centre of her sound. The sessions that followed transformed her career.

I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You) and then Respect, released in 1967, made her a star. Respect, a reworking of an Otis Redding song, became an anthem of both racial pride and women's empowerment. A run of celebrated albums followed, including Lady Soul and Aretha Now, with songs such as Chain of Fools, Think, and the luminous (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.

The Atlantic years are regarded as the summit of her achievement, and the musicians who worked with her, including the Muscle Shoals rhythm section, matched her voice with arrangements of unusual sympathy and restraint. She won a sequence of Grammy Awards and became the defining female voice of soul music, her records setting a standard that her contemporaries struggled to match. Her success was both commercial and artistic, a rare combination in the music business.

== Voice, Technique and Interpretation ==
Franklin's voice combined a gospel shout with a rare control of phrasing and dynamics, and she could move from tenderness to exultation within a single line. Her piano playing, rooted in the church, gave her a personal command of her arrangements, and she shaped a song with a freedom that placed the emotional truth of the lyric above any fixed melody.

She reworked the material she was given, rearranging it to suit the demands of her voice and often changing the emphasis of a song's meaning. Her use of call and response, of bent notes and of intimately spoken passages drew directly on the gospel tradition. This marriage of technique and feeling set a standard for soul singing that few have equalled.

Her style was rooted in a naturally powerful instrument that she controlled with great subtlety, and she was equally at home in the pulpit and in the recording studio. She could dominate a large arena without apparent strain, and she projected vulnerability and authority in the same phrase. This range, coupled with her deep knowledge of African American musical tradition, made her an artist of exceptional breadth.

== Career, Acclaim and Later Years ==
Through the 1970s and 1980s Franklin continued to record and perform, moving between soul, gospel, rock and pop, and she made the 1972 live album Amazing Grace, the best-selling gospel record of its time. Her career had quieter periods, but she remained a revered live performer and a frequent figure at national ceremonies and benefit concerts.

In the 1980s she had a resurgence with hit songs and a series of popular collaborations, and she became the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Later honours included a National Medal of Arts and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and in 2009 she sang at the inauguration of an American president. She remained active almost until her death in Detroit in 2018.

Her personal life was marked by both triumph and difficulty, and she confronted illness and loss with the same resilience she brought to her music. She returned repeatedly to gospel in her later recordings, closing a circle that had begun in her father's church. Even as her voice aged, it retained the authority and the emotional directness that had made her name.

== Influence and Legacy ==
Franklin's influence reached across genres and generations, and singers of soul, rock, gospel and pop acknowledged her as a model. She reclaimed respect as a word of self-worth, and her recordings gave the civil rights movement and the women's movement a voice that carried far beyond the radio. Her phrasing and her courage in interpretation shaped the way popular singers approach a song.

She won numerous Grammy Awards, including the first given to a woman in the rhythm and blues category, and her funeral became a national occasion of tribute and gospel celebration. She is remembered as one of the greatest vocalists in American history, an artist whose religious roots and secular triumphs were inseparable parts of a single, unmistakable sound.

Respect remains one of the most recognisable recordings of the twentieth century and a perennial anthem of dignity and self-assertion, sung at occasions of both celebration and protest. Biographies, films and tributes have extended her reputation, and her influence is acknowledged by every generation of soul and pop singers that has followed. She left a body of work that defines an era and continues to inspire.
