'''Andre Agassi''' the American former professional tennis player (born 1970) who won eight Grand Slam singles titles, completed a career Grand Slam and, as one of the most gifted and charismatic baseliners of his generation, helped to transform the sport's image and popularity.

== Early Life and Prodigy Years ==
Andre Kirk Agassi was born on 29 April 1970 in Las Vegas, Nevada, the son of an Iranian-born father who had boxed for Iran at the Olympics before emigrating to the United States. His father drove him relentlessly from an early age, installing a mechanical ball machine and pushing him through thousands of practice strokes a day.

At thirteen he was sent to the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida, one of the first full-time tennis boarding schools in the world. The regime was harsh and the young Agassi was homesick, but he developed the groundstrokes and return of serve that would define his game. He turned professional in 1986 at the age of sixteen.

He quickly became known for his long dyed hair, colourful clothing and rebellious manner, a look that departed sharply from the conservative image of tennis. He reached his first Grand Slam semi-final in 1988 and was soon one of the most watched players in the sport, admired as much for his charisma as his talent.

== Grand Slam Success and the Career Slam ==
Agassi won his first major title at Wimbledon in 1992, defeating Goran Ivanisevic in a final that many regard as one of the best ever played. The victory surprised those who had doubted whether his baseline game could succeed on grass, and it changed his own sense of what he could achieve.

He won the US Open in 1994 and the Australian Open in 1995, and in 1999 he captured the French Open, becoming only the fifth man in history to win all four Grand Slam singles titles and the first to do so on three different surfaces. He added further Australian and US Open titles to reach eight majors in all.

His rivalry with Pete Sampras became one of the defining contests of the era. The two men represented contrasting styles, Agassi the aggressive returner and counterpuncher, Sampras the attacking serve-and-volleyer, and their matches drew enormous audiences and helped to lift the profile of men's tennis.

== Struggles and Personal Life ==
Agassi's career was not a straightforward ascent. He endured dips in form and motivation, and he struggled with the demands of fame and with a marriage to the actress Brooke Shields that ended in divorce. He also had a well-documented dislike of tennis itself, revealing later that he had resented the sport for much of his life.

In the late 1990s he rebuilt his career and his fitness, training seriously for the first time and emerging as a more mature and disciplined competitor. In 1997 he married the tennis champion Steffi Graf, a partnership that proved enduring and supportive, and the couple later established a charitable foundation.

His openness about his struggles, including his use of a recreational drug in 1997 and his account of his troubled relationship with his father, distinguished him from the guarded image typical of professional athletes. His candour made him a figure of unusual sympathy as well as admiration.

== Style of Play and Rivalries ==
Agassi was one of the finest returners and pure ball-strikers in the history of the game. He took the ball early, standing close to the baseline, and used short, compact swings to redirect pace with remarkable consistency. His two-handed backhand was a particular weapon, and his ability to dictate rallies from the first shot made him formidable on every surface.

He was also among the first players to exploit modern equipment fully, using an oversized racket and lightweight string to generate power and control. His willingness to adapt his game and his equipment as he aged showed a professionalism that extended his career well beyond the norm for a baseliner.

Beyond the Sampras rivalry, he had memorable contests with a range of opponents including Boris Becker, Jim Courier and, in his later years, the rising generation of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. His final match, at the 2006 US Open, moved a packed crowd to tears as he left the court to a prolonged standing ovation.

== Legacy and Later Life ==
Agassi retired in 2006 and became an influential figure in education. The Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy, a public charter school in a deprived area of Las Vegas, opened in 2001 and became a model for philanthropic investment in schooling, reflecting his conviction that opportunity should not depend on wealth.

He also worked as a commentator and wrote a frank and widely read autobiography, Open, that described his ambivalence about tennis and his personal struggles. The book deepened public understanding of the pressures faced by prodigies and won praise for its honesty.

He is remembered as one of the greatest players of his era and as a transformative personality for the sport. His career Grand Slam, his charity and his willingness to speak candidly about the cost of success have secured him a place among the most significant figures in the history of tennis.
