'''Zuo Quan''' the Chinese communist general and chief of staff of the Eighth Route Army (1905-1942), one of the most senior officers of the war against Japan and the highest-ranking commander of the communist forces to fall in that conflict. He was celebrated for his tactical skill and for his dedication to the revolutionary cause.

== Education and Revolutionary Beginnings ==
Zuo Quan was born on 15 March 1905 in Liling county, Hunan province, into a family of modest circumstances. He showed great academic promise as a boy and studied at a modern school, and in the 1920s he went abroad as part of the movement of Chinese students who pursued their education in Europe, studying in France and then in the Soviet Union.

In Moscow he attended a military academy, where he received a thorough training in staff work, tactics and the organisation of modern armies. The combination of a first-class technical education and a firm commitment to the revolution made him one of the best-prepared officers of the communist movement, and he returned to China with a command of military science that few of his comrades could match.

He entered the service of the Red Army and distinguished himself in the campaigns of the Jiangxi soviet, where his skill in planning and in the direction of operations brought him rapid promotion. He took part in the Long March and became one of the senior staff officers of the central Red Army, known for his exact and painstaking work in preparing the movement of the columns.

== Chief of Staff of the Eighth Route Army ==
When the Red Army was reorganised as the Eighth Route Army at the outbreak of the war with Japan in 1937, Zuo Quan was appointed its deputy chief of staff, and in practice he carried the burden of the day-to-day planning of operations in north China. He worked at the side of the commander and the deputy commander, translating their strategic intentions into detailed orders and movements.

He helped to plan the great campaigns of the early war, including the ambush at Pingxingguan and the wide-ranging operations that followed, and he was responsible for the staff organisation that allowed dispersed guerrilla formations to act as a single force. His maps, orders and analyses became the model of staff practice for the communist armies.

He was closely involved in the planning of the Hundred Regiments Offensive of 1940, the largest coordinated series of attacks mounted by the communists during the war. He dealt with the immense difficulties of supply, communication and coordination that such an operation required, and he worked with tireless attention to detail through the hard months of the campaign.

== The Base Areas of North China ==
Zuo Quan took a central part in the building and defence of the base areas of north China, the network of districts behind the Japanese lines from which the Eighth Route Army drew its recruits, its food and its intelligence. He worked to organise the local militia, to establish the staff system through which the various areas were coordinated, and to plan operations that would protect the civilian population from Japanese reprisals.

The Japanese campaigns of 1941 and 1942, intended to destroy the communist base areas by ruthless sweeps, encirclement and the killing and deportation of villagers, placed the Eighth Route Army under extreme pressure. Zuo Quan was responsible for much of the planning of the resistance to these campaigns, devising the mobile tactics and the dispersal of forces that allowed the army to survive in the face of superior numbers and equipment.

He also took part in the political and organisational work of the base areas, encouraging production to feed the troops and the population and maintaining the morale of the army during the most testing period of the war. He was regarded as one of the most capable and most trusted of the younger officers of the communist high command.

== Death at Mount Crossfire ==
In May 1942 the Japanese launched a major offensive against the headquarters of the Eighth Route Army in the Taihang mountains of Shanxi. On 25 May, as the headquarters column attempted to break through the encircling Japanese forces, Zuo Quan was struck by shellfire on a ridge near Mount Crossfire and killed. He was thirty-seven years old.

His death was a severe loss to the communist forces, for he was among their ablest and most experienced staff officers and had played a leading part in the direction of the war in the north. He was the highest-ranking commander of the Eighth Route Army to be killed in action during the war with Japan, and his death became a symbol of the sacrifices of the conflict.

A memorial was raised in his honour in the Taihang mountains, and his name was given to the county and to the schools near the place where he fell. His example of diligence, technical competence and devotion was held up to the officers of the army as a model of the professional revolutionary soldier.

== Reputation and Legacy ==
Zuo Quan's reputation rests on the combination of a modern military education with an unflagging commitment to the revolutionary cause. He was respected by his superiors for the care and accuracy of his staff work and by his subordinates for his willingness to share their hardships, and he was admired for the clarity of his strategic judgement in the difficult conditions of the war.

His writings on military affairs and his reports on the campaigns of north China are studied as documents of the development of the communist theory of war, and his name is associated with the growth of the Eighth Route Army from a small force into the great guerrilla army that helped to defeat the Japanese and to win the civil war.

He is remembered in the history of the People's Liberation Army as one of the finest commanders of the war against Japan, and the place of his death in the Taihang mountains has become a site of commemoration. His short life and his devotion to duty made him an enduring figure of the revolutionary tradition.
