'''Zhang Zai''' a philosopher of the Northern Song dynasty (1020-1077) whose teaching on the supreme void and the unity of all things gave Chinese metaphysics a new and powerful vocabulary and left a lasting mark on later Confucian thought.

== Life and Background ==
Zhang Zai was born in 1020 in Hengqu, in the region of Fengxiang in the northwest of China, and his courtesy name was Zihou. His family had produced officials, and he was educated in the classics and the literary arts expected of a scholar of the governing class. As a young man he was drawn to military matters and to the study of strategy, hoping to serve in the defence of the frontier against the incursions of the western peoples.

His interests turned decisively to philosophy after a meeting and an exchange of letters with the elder brothers Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi, the two great teachers of the emerging school of principle. Their conversation persuaded him that the way to order the world lay not in tactics but in the understanding of its underlying pattern, and he devoted himself from that time to the study of the classics and to the cultivation of his own mind.

He held official posts at intervals during his middle years, serving in local government and in the capital, and he was noted for his integrity and for his concern for the welfare of the people. In his last years, disappointed by the politics of reform, he retired to his native region, where he taught a circle of disciples and set his thought in order. He died in 1077 while travelling back toward the capital.

== The Supreme Void and Qi ==
Zhang Zai's philosophy rests on the idea of qi, the vital stuff or force of which all things are made. He taught that the universe is a single continuum of qi, now dispersed and rarefied as the supreme void, now condensed into the visible forms of things. The void is not nothing but the subtlest state of the same reality, so that emptiness and solidity differ only in the mode of their condensation and dispersal.

From this he drew his most striking conclusion: that there are no true divisions between things. Every person, every creature and every object is a temporary gathering of the common qi, and when the gathering dissolves its material returns to the whole. The boundaries we see are the boundaries of temporary form, and behind them lies a single substance in which all beings share and to which all return.

He expressed this vision in the celebrated words that the people are my brothers and sisters and all things are my companions. Moral feeling, in his account, is not an arbitrary rule imposed from outside but the natural recognition of a kinship that really exists. To injure another is to injure a part of the same body, and the sage is one who has realised this unity fully in his own life.

== The Western Inscription ==
The Western Inscription, a short piece carved upon the western wall of his study and named for that circumstance, is the finest expression of his ethical vision. It begins by calling heaven the father and earth the mother of all and declaring the human being a small part of the vast flow, and it goes on to name the various classes of people and things as members of one family under this cosmic parentage.

The piece honours the sages and worthies as elder brothers, the worthy as the honoured company, and the weak, the weary and the afflicted as brothers in need of care. It calls on the reader to serve heaven and earth, to respect age, to cherish the young, and to regard the sorrows and joys of all people as his own. In a few compact lines it gathers the entire moral teaching of the philosopher.

The text became one of the most admired writings in the Confucian tradition, prized for the breadth of its sympathy and the dignity of its language. Later teachers set it beside the other short classics of the movement, and generations of scholars read it as the clearest statement of the belief that all humanity forms a single moral community rooted in the nature of the cosmos.

== Knowledge and Self-Cultivation ==
Zhang Zai distinguished two kinds of knowledge, one that comes from the senses and deals with objects and their appearances, and a higher wisdom that grasps the underlying unity of things. The first is the ordinary knowledge of the world, useful and necessary; the second is the insight to which the mind rises when it has freed itself from the narrow attachments of the self. His philosophy of education aimed at the enlargement of this higher understanding.

He held that the inborn nature of the human being is good, being the same as the nature of the cosmos, but that it is obscured by the physical constitution and by the selfish desires that grow from it. The task of self-cultivation is therefore to transform the physical nature, to discipline the passions and to restore the original clarity of the mind, so that the person comes to act in harmony with the cosmic order.

He gave a famous account of learning in which the aim is to serve heaven and earth, to establish the mind for the people and to secure the inheritance of the sages for later ages. These words, remembered as the mission of the scholar, summarise his conviction that the pursuit of wisdom is bound up with the welfare of all living things and with the continuity of culture across the generations.

== Influence and Legacy ==
Zhang Zai was the founder of the school of thought known as the school of qi, and his monistic account of the universe as a single substance offered an alternative both to the dualism that separated principle from matter and to the otherworldly tendencies of Buddhist thought. His system gave Confucian philosophy a coherent cosmology and a metaphysical foundation for its ethics.

His influence worked in two directions. Later philosophers of principle, including the greatest of the Southern Song, honoured him as a master while refining his ideas in their own terms, and the Western Inscription was incorporated into the canon of the movement. At the same time his emphasis on the reality of qi and on the unity of all things inspired a distinct tradition that flowered again in the Ming and Qing.

He is remembered for the depth of his vision and for the moral earnestness that pervades it. The image of the human family embracing all creation, and the call to serve the common good as a duty rooted in the nature of reality, gave Chinese thought one of its most enduring ideals. His name remains attached to the conviction that philosophy and compassion are inseparable.
