'''Yu Yingshi''' a Chinese-American historian of China of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries (1930-2021), a leading figure in the modern study of Chinese intellectual history and one of the most influential humanistic scholars of the Chinese-speaking world. His work ranged across the intellectual history of the imperial and modern periods, the history of commerce and religion, and reflection on the role of the intellectual and the meaning of culture.

== Early Life and Education ==
Yu Yingshi was born on 22 January 1930 in Tianjin, the son of a scholar and poet of Anhui origin who had studied in Japan and who instilled in him a love of literature and history. The family moved during the upheavals of the 1930s and 1940s, and the young Yu witnessed the war and the political turmoil that reshaped Chinese society. His father's erudition and integrity left a deep and lifelong impression.

He went to Hong Kong in 1950 and entered New Asia College, a small institution founded by scholars of the older generation who had left the mainland, where he studied under Ch'ien Mu and came to share the conviction that the study of Chinese culture was a form of cultural responsibility. From there he went to the United States, taking a doctorate in history at Harvard University, where he worked under the direction of Yang Lien-sheng and other leading scholars.

His training combined the traditions of Chinese classical learning with modern social and historical method. He learned to move between the close reading of texts and the broader questions of social history, and this dual discipline shaped an approach that would make him one of the most wide-ranging historians of his generation.

== Career and Scholarship ==
Yu Yingshi held teaching posts at several universities before settling for many years at Yale University, where he was a professor of history and built a reputation as a demanding and inspiring teacher. He later taught at Princeton University and held a distinguished chair at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and he lectured throughout Asia, Europe and North America. He trained large numbers of students who went on to academic careers of their own.

His scholarship was characterised by an unusual breadth. He wrote on the intellectual history of the Han, Wei and Jin periods, on the thought of Zhu Xi and the Neo-Confucian tradition, on the history of Chinese commerce and its relationship to ethics, and on the great figures of modern Chinese thought. He refused the narrow specialisation that was becoming common and insisted that the historian must be able to see the connections between fields.

He was also a prolific essayist and public intellectual, writing in Chinese for a general readership on the state of culture, the responsibility of the intellectual and the prospects of Chinese civilisation. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and received numerous honours, and his death in 2021 was widely mourned as the passing of one of the last masters of a broad humanistic learning.

== Chinese Intellectual History ==
Yu Yingshi's most enduring contribution lies in the history of Chinese thought. His early work on the period of division after the fall of the Han examined the intellectual and religious changes of the era, tracing the rise of new forms of philosophical and religious speculation and the transformation of the scholar's role. He showed how the collapse of the imperial order produced new ways of thinking about the individual and the cosmos.

His studies of Song and Ming thought analysed the development of Neo-Confucianism and its relation to politics, society and religion, and he explored the tension between the pursuit of sagehood and the demands of public service. He wrote with particular subtlety on the place of the intellectual within the state, on the ideal of the scholar who withdraws from office and on the ways in which ideas were transmitted through the academies and lineages of the tradition.

His later work turned to the intellectual history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, examining the encounter with Western thought and the successive movements of reform and revolution. He wrote on the modern reinterpretation of the Chinese tradition and on the dilemmas of scholars caught between loyalty to their culture and the pressures of political ideology, and his analyses of these questions were read far beyond the academy.

== Commerce, Religion and Society ==
A distinctive strand of his work concerned the relationship between Chinese religion and economic life. He examined the ethics and worldview of the merchant classes of the late imperial period and the ways in which religious values, family obligation and commercial activity interacted, and he brought the questions raised by comparative studies of capitalism and religion to the Chinese evidence with care and originality.

He wrote on the religious practices of the ordinary population, on popular devotion and the moral ideas that animated it, and on the deep continuities he saw between elite and popular culture. His essays on these themes helped to establish the history of Chinese religion as a serious field of social inquiry and inspired a generation of younger historians.

He was also concerned with the history of the Chinese world of learning as an institution, with the academies, the examination system and the networks of patronage and friendship through which scholarship was carried on. His ability to combine social and intellectual history gave his work a coherence that few of his contemporaries achieved, and his influence extended into sociology, religious studies and the study of modern China.

== Influence and Legacy ==
Yu Yingshi was one of the most influential Chinese historians of his age, and his essays were read by educated readers throughout the Chinese-speaking world. He was a public presence in debates about culture and politics, always insisting on intellectual independence and on the historian's duty to judge evidence rather than to serve opinion. His authority rested on the union of deep learning and moral seriousness.

He maintained throughout his life a critical distance from political orthodoxy of every kind, and he defended the value of a humanistic education against the pressures of utility and ideology. He was a defender of the classical tradition while refusing to idealise it, and he combined a scholar's detachment with a strong sense of moral commitment to the culture he studied.

He died on 1 August 2021. His books and essays continue to be studied and debated, and his students hold academic posts across the world. He is remembered as a historian who insisted that the study of China required both technical mastery and a broad vision of human culture, and as one of the twentieth century's most articulate voices on the meaning of the Chinese intellectual tradition.
