'''Xiong Shili''' the twentieth-century Chinese philosopher (1885-1968) and one of the most original metaphysical thinkers of modern China, who founded the New Confucian movement and developed a system built on the concepts of consciousness-only and the ceaseless transformation of reality. His work gave a modern formulation to the idealist strand of the Chinese tradition.

== Early Life and Revolutionary Years ==
Xiong Shili was born in 1885 in Huanggang, Hubei province, into a poor family and lost his father at an early age. He received some classical instruction but was largely self-taught, and his reading of the Confucian and Buddhist classics gave him the intellectual foundation on which he later built his philosophy. His intellectual independence, formed in adversity, remained a defining trait throughout his life.

As a young man he was drawn into the revolutionary movement against the Qing dynasty. He joined the military and took part in the uprising that overthrew the empire in 1911, and for a time he held to radical political views, studying and writing in the atmosphere of reform that swept China in that decade. He later became disillusioned with politics as a means of moral renewal.

Turning decisively to philosophy, he studied Buddhism, especially the consciousness-only school, and then the Confucian classics. By the 1920s he had begun to teach at universities, including Peking University, where he lectured on Buddhist and Confucian thought. The move from political activism to metaphysical reflection marked the beginning of his mature career.

== Philosophy of Transformation ==
Xiong Shili's central work, the New Treatise on Consciousness-Only, the Xin weishi lun, appeared in 1932 and set out his mature position. He both drew upon and sharply criticised the Buddhist consciousness-only school, arguing that its account of reality failed to do justice to the creative activity of the mind. In its place he developed a philosophy of constant transformation in which reality is understood as an unceasing process rather than a static order.

He held that the universe is constituted by a single dynamic reality that manifests at once as the tendency to integrate and the tendency to differentiate, principles he named closing and opening. These two aspects are not separate substances but phases of one movement, and from their interplay arise the world of things and the activity of consciousness. This framework gave his metaphysics a systematic structure at once monist and dynamic.

A second major work, the Essentials of the Mind, the Mingxin pian, elaborated these ideas further and is often considered his philosophical testament. In it he developed the Confucian doctrine of the original mind and its moral nature, presenting the moral life as the realisation of a reality that is at once cosmic and personal.

== Buddhism, Confucianism and Synthesis ==
Xiong Shili's thought is distinguished by its creative synthesis of Buddhist and Confucian elements. From Buddhism he took the analysis of consciousness and the discipline of looking inward, while from Confucianism he took the affirmation of the world and of moral responsibility. He rejected the quietist strands of both traditions, insisting that enlightenment must issue in active engagement with life.

He argued against those who treated the Confucian tradition as a fixed body of dogma, holding that its truths must be rethought in each generation. His own system was presented as a recovery of the genuine insight of Confucius and Mencius, freed from the metaphysical accretions and the political distortions of later commentary. This combination of reverence for the tradition with radical reinterpretation became characteristic of the movement he founded.

His critique of Buddhist idealism focused on what he saw as its tendency to negate the world and to seek escape from suffering rather than the perfection of life. Against this he affirmed that reality is good and that human effort participates in its creative advance, a position that links him to the activist strand of Confucian thought.

== Career and Political Pressure ==
Xiong Shili taught at Peking University for many years and later returned to a university chair after the war. He trained a notable circle of students, among them some of the leading New Confucian thinkers of the later twentieth century, and his teaching exerted an influence out of proportion to the small number of his published works. He was honoured as a teacher of unusual intellectual seriousness.

After the establishment of the People's Republic he remained in mainland China and continued to write, though the political climate became increasingly hostile to speculative philosophy. He refused to abandon his Confucian convictions and was increasingly isolated in his final years, sustained by his study and by the loyalty of a few students.

He died in 1968 in Shanghai during a period of severe political turmoil. His later writings, including his final treatises, were preserved and published after his death, and they confirmed his standing as the most systematic metaphysical thinker of modern Confucianism.

== Influence and Legacy ==
Xiong Shili is regarded as the founding figure of the New Confucian movement, which sought to give the Chinese philosophical tradition a modern and creative form. His students, including Tang Junyi, Mou Zongsan and Xu Fuguan, carried his concerns abroad and developed them in new directions, and their work came to define the movement in the second half of the century.

His synthesis of Buddhist and Confucian thought offered a model for how traditional metaphysics could be restated in the language of modern philosophy without losing its distinctive concerns. Thinkers who wished to affirm the spiritual resources of the Chinese tradition looked to his example, and his concepts of transformation and creative activity entered the vocabulary of later Confucian philosophy.

He is remembered as a philosopher of profound originality and uncompromising conviction, a man who refused to subordinate his metaphysical vision to political fashion. In the history of twentieth-century Chinese thought his name stands for the possibility of a modern philosophy rooted in the classical heritage.
