'''Tang Lan''' the Chinese philologist and palaeographer (1901-1979) who made lasting contributions to the decipherment of oracle-bone and bronze inscriptions and to the study of Chinese Calligraphy and etymology. He combined rigorous epigraphic method with a wide command of classical literature and wrote influential textbooks that trained generations of students in the reading of ancient texts.

== Early Life and Education ==
Tang Lan was born on 8 January 1901 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, into a family of scholars. His father was a well-known physician and bibliophile, and the household was filled with books and works of art. The boy learned to read the classics early and developed an enduring love of calligraphy and of the study of written forms.

He attended a modern school in Hangzhou and later studied at a college of Chinese medicine, but his real education came from the family library and from the guidance of older scholars. He read widely in philology, palaeography and the history of the classical texts, and he practised calligraphy daily, acquiring a hand that was both disciplined and expressive.

By his twenties he was already known among antiquarians for his ability to read difficult inscriptions and for his careful scholarship. He began to publish notes on bronze and seal script and to correspond with the leading epigraphers of the day.

His early essays on ancient seals, weights, measures and coins displayed the qualities that would define his mature work: an exact attention to the forms of characters, a wide comparison of sources and a readiness to revise an opinion when new evidence appeared. These habits of mind served him well in the more difficult problems that lay ahead.

== Epigraphy and Palaeography ==
Tang Lan devoted his career to the study of the Chinese script and of the objects that carry it. He worked on oracle-bone inscriptions, on the bronze texts of the Shang and Zhou dynasties, on the seals and tallies of the Warring States and Han periods, and on the variants of the script as they developed over time.

His method was to compare forms across many sources, to use the structure of the characters and the context of the documents to propose readings, and to test those readings against the transmitted literature. This combination of internal analysis and external evidence allowed him to resolve a number of long-standing difficulties.

He made important advances in the study of the bronze inscriptions of the Zhou period, clarifying the meaning of terms relating to ritual, kinship and administration, and he contributed to the understanding of the oracle-bone vocabulary. His writings on the evolution of the script traced the descent of modern characters from the earliest forms.

== Teaching and Textbooks ==
Tang Lan taught at several universities and research institutes and was renowned as a lecturer who could make the most technical material intelligible. He trained many of the epigraphers and palaeographers who dominated the field in the second half of the twentieth century.

He wrote textbooks and reference works on the history of the Chinese script, on the reading of ancient characters and on calligraphy, which became standard introductions. Their clarity and their systematic presentation of the evidence gave students the tools to work independently on newly discovered material.

His concern for teaching extended to the popularisation of the subject. He believed that the study of the script was not a private mystery but a branch of knowledge that could be shared, and his books brought the results of technical research to a broad readership of teachers and enthusiasts.

Many of his former students went on to occupy chairs in philology and palaeography across the country, and they preserved his emphasis on the close reading of primary material. Even where later research revised his conclusions, the clarity of his exposition ensured that his works continued to be read alongside more recent studies.

== Calligraphy and Cultural Work ==
Tang Lan was himself a distinguished calligrapher, accomplished in several scripts and especially admired for his writing in the ancient and clerical styles. His practice as an artist informed his scholarship, giving him an intuitive sense of stroke order and of the way forms change when they are written by hand.

He wrote extensively on the aesthetics and history of calligraphy, treating it as both an art and a branch of the study of writing. His essays on the great calligraphers and on the relation between script and brush technique are still read by students of the subject.

He took part in the scholarly and cultural life of the early years of the People's Republic, serving on committees concerned with the reform and standardisation of the Chinese script and with the preservation of antiquities. His advice on the simplification and classification of characters drew on a lifetime of study of their history.

== Influence and Legacy ==
Tang Lan's scholarship helped to establish epigraphy and palaeography as rigorous academic disciplines in modern China. He demonstrated that the study of the script could be pursued with the same exactness as textual criticism, and he trained the scholars who would carry that programme forward.

His textbooks remained in use for decades and his monographs on bronze and oracle-bone inscriptions are still consulted. The readings he proposed for particular characters have been accepted, modified or rejected by later research, but his method of argument, grounded in evidence and cautious inference, remains a model.

He died on 21 January 1979 in Beijing. He is remembered as a man who united the scholar and the artist, who could read the bones of the Shang and also write a beautiful line of calligraphy, and whose teaching opened the ancient script to many who would otherwise have found it closed.
