'''Tang Bohu''' the Chinese painter, poet and scholar of the Ming dynasty (1470-1524) who stands as one of the most celebrated artists of his age and as a legendary figure of wit and romance in later popular culture. A master of landscape, figure painting and bird-and-flower subjects, he was counted among the leading painters of the Wu school and was renowned for the elegance of both his brushwork and his verse.

== Early Life and Brilliant Promise ==
Tang Bohu was born in 1470 in Suzhou, the prosperous commercial and cultural centre of the lower Yangtze and the heartland of the Wu school of painting. His family name was Tang and his given name Yin, while Bohu was a courtesy name by which he became widely known; he also used the sobriquet Liuru Jushi, the Master of the Six Like a Buddha, among others. Suzhou at that time was the richest and most artistically active city in China.

He showed exceptional talent as a boy and impressed the scholars of his native city with his intelligence and his skill in letters and painting. He studied under the painter Zhou Chen, from whom he learned the discipline of the brush, and he formed friendships with other gifted young men, including the poet and painter Wen Zhengming, who would become his lifelong companion and correspondent.

His early promise seemed about to be fulfilled when in 1498 he took the provincial examination at Nanjing with the highest honours, an achievement that opened the prospect of a brilliant official career. He was widely expected to pass the metropolitan examination at the capital and to rise high in the service of the state. This expectation was shattered, however, by a scandal that altered the course of his life.

== The Examination Scandal and Later Years ==
In 1499, while in Beijing to sit the metropolitan examination, Tang Bohu was caught up in a case of alleged cheating. He and a fellow candidate were accused of having obtained the questions in advance through the influence of a patron, and although the precise facts remain unclear, he was punished by being stripped of his examination status and disqualified from public office.

The disgrace was devastating and lifelong. He returned to Suzhou stripped of the official future that his talents had promised, and he endured both poverty and the disdain of those who now found it convenient to keep their distance. His response was to turn his full energies to art and literature, and to cultivate the persona of the carefree and somewhat dissolute scholar that legend later amplified into a comic and amorous hero.

He never regained his position in the examination system, and repeated attempts to secure advancement failed. He supported himself by painting and by teaching, and for a period he went south to Ningbo and to Fujian and later joined a prince in Jiangxi, only to grow disillusioned with the prince's ambitions and to extricate himself with difficulty. He returned once more to Suzhou, poor, ill and disappointed, and devoted his last years to painting and poetry.

== Painting and Artistic Style ==
Tang Bohu painted landscapes, figures, birds and flowers, and he was distinguished by the range of his brush and by his ability to move between styles. In landscape he combined the monumental traditions of the northern masters with the softer and more literary manner favoured in Suzhou, achieving works of subtle atmosphere and confident structure. He drew freely upon the styles of the Song and Yuan painters while giving them a personal and refined accent.

In his figure paintings and in his depictions of beautiful women he showed a delicate sensitivity to gesture and dress, and his images of ladies in gardens and palaces became among the most admired of their kind. He also painted the traditional themes of scholars at leisure, travellers in mountains and gentlemen viewing the moon, subjects that expressed the ideals of the scholarly class to which he belonged.

His work is characterised by a lively and expressive line, a sure sense of composition and an unusual elegance, and by a readiness to adapt his manner to the subject and the occasion. He was equally at home in careful and coloured works intended for patrons and in swift and loose sketches made for friends, and this versatility contributed to his great reputation among later collectors and critics.

== Poetry, Personality and Legend ==
Tang Bohu was a poet of real distinction, and his verse reflects the mixture of brilliance, disappointment and defiant cheerfulness that shaped his life. He wrote about love and beauty, about poverty and pride, about the pleasures of wine and friendship, and about the vanity of worldly ambition. His poetic voice is direct and personal, and it departs from the elaborate archness of much contemporary verse.

His character combined great charm with a streak of recklessness. He is described by contemporaries as handsome, quick-witted and fond of company, but also as given to melancholy and to occasional excess. His readiness to associate with actors, courtesans and other marginal figures surprised the respectable, yet he retained the loyalty of serious friends such as Wen Zhengming, who admired his gifts even when he disapproved of his habits.

In later centuries his life was embroidered into legend, and he became the hero of stories and plays in which he appears as a clever and amorous scholar who outwits the pompous and wins the lady of his choice. The historical man was far more complex and more troubled than this comic figure, but the legends reflect a genuine memory of his wit and his personal magnetism. Popular culture has kept his name alive among the most familiar of all Chinese artists.

== Influence and Legacy ==
Tang Bohu is remembered as one of the four great masters of the Ming and, together with Shen Zhou, Wen Zhengming and Qiu Ying, as a central figure of the Wu school. His paintings are prized by collectors and museums throughout the world, and his works are studied for their technical mastery and their expressive power. His influence extended to later painters who admired his fusion of learning, technique and personal feeling.

His poetry and his letters have also survived as documents of the artistic life of Suzhou, and they illuminate the networks of patronage, friendship and rivalry that sustained the painters of the region. Scholars value his writings for the light they throw upon the ambitions and the disappointments of a professional artist in a society that still measured success by office.

Beyond the history of art, he endures as a cultural emblem of talent joined to misfortune and of genius that refuses to be crushed by circumstance. He died in 1524 in poverty, his official hopes long extinguished, yet his name became a byword for brilliance and the subject of enduring fascination in Chinese literature and entertainment.
