'''Sima Yi''' the Chinese general and statesman of the Three Kingdoms period (179-251) who rose to supreme power in the state of Wei and laid the foundations for the dynasty of his descendants, the Jin. A master of strategy, patience and political manoeuvre, he is remembered as the man who outlasted Zhuge Liang and destroyed his rivals at court.

== Early Life and Rise at Court ==
Sima Yi was born in 179 in Wen county, in the region of the middle Yellow River, into an old and respected family of officials. From his youth he was noted for his learning and his unusual composure, and the histories record that he showed signs of extraordinary self-control and far-sightedness. He was well versed in the classics and in the art of government.

He entered the service of the Wei state, the northern kingdom founded by Cao Cao and ruled after Cao Cao's death by his son Cao Pi. Sima Yi became a trusted minister and adviser, and he was given important commands in the field. He supported Cao Pi's assumption of the imperial title and was rewarded with high office.

Under the later Wei rulers he served as a senior general and regent, and he steadily accumulated authority. He was known for his ability to conceal his intentions, to wait for the right moment and to strike decisively when his opponents were unprepared. These qualities made him one of the most formidable politicians of the age.

== The Struggle with Zhuge Liang ==
Sima Yi's most celebrated campaign was his long contest with Zhuge Liang, the chancellor of the state of Shu, who invaded the north in a series of expeditions. Zhuge Liang advanced through the mountains into the region of the Wei river, and Sima Yi was charged with the defence of the frontier.

He adopted a strategy of caution, refusing to be drawn into battle when the advantage lay with the enemy and relying instead on supply and endurance. He is said to have declined to engage Zhuge Liang directly on several occasions, to the frustration of his own officers, because he understood that time favoured the stronger and better supplied state of Wei.

The contest ended when Zhuge Liang fell ill and died in 234 during the last of his campaigns. Sima Yi is said to have inspected the abandoned Shu camp and to have remarked on the brilliance of his opponent's arrangements. The victory, achieved by patience rather than by a decisive battle, secured the northern frontier and confirmed Sima Yi's reputation.

== The Coup and Supreme Power ==
Within Wei, Sima Yi's authority was challenged by the regent Cao Shuang, a member of the imperial clan who sought to concentrate power in his own hands. The two men competed for influence over the young emperor, and Sima Yi withdrew for a time, feigning illness in order to allay his rival's suspicion.

In 249 he struck. While Cao Shuang accompanied the emperor on a visit to the imperial tombs, Sima Yi seized the capital and the arsenals, and he induced Cao Shuang to surrender on the promise of safety. Cao Shuang and his associates were then executed, and the whole of the Cao clan's power passed to Sima Yi. The coup is remembered as a masterpiece of calculated treachery and of timing.

After the coup Sima Yi held supreme authority in Wei, governing in the emperor's name and crushing a series of revolts by loyalist commanders. He died in 251, leaving his power to his sons, and his descendants completed the work: his grandson Sima Yan would one day depose the last Wei emperor and found the Jin dynasty.

== Statesmanship and Method ==
Sima Yi was as much an administrator as a soldier. He pursued policies of agricultural settlement and military colonisation on the frontier, encouraging soldiers and peasants to cultivate the land and so reducing the burden of transporting food to the armies. These measures strengthened the economy of Wei and made its long wars sustainable.

He was a careful student of the balance of forces, and his campaigns show a preference for preparation, logistics and the exploitation of his opponent's weaknesses rather than for glory in the field. He understood that a commander's greatest asset is often the capacity to wait, and his ability to endure the criticism of impatient subordinates was tested repeatedly.

At court he was subtle and ruthless, capable of long concealment and of sudden violence. He cultivated the loyalty of the great families and the army, and he married into powerful connections. His combination of patience, realism and remorselessness made him one of the most effective political operators in Chinese history.

== Influence and Legacy ==
Sima Yi's seizure of power transformed the history of the Three Kingdoms. The Cao clan, which had founded the strongest of the three states, was reduced to a figurehead, and the real authority passed to the family of Sima. Within a generation the Sima had conquered the rival states of Shu and Wu and reunified China under the Jin dynasty.

He is remembered as the counterweight to Zhuge Liang in the stories of the period, the patient strategist who defeated the more celebrated genius by refusing to be hurried. In the popular tradition the two men are often paired, and Sima Yi's caution is set against his opponent's brilliance as an illustration of two styles of command.

Historians have judged him with a mixture of admiration and unease, for his rise was achieved through a coup that violated the trust of his sovereign. He stands in Chinese thought as a symbol of the ambitious minister who waits and seizes power, and his methods were studied and feared by rulers for centuries afterward.
