'''Ouyang Xiu''' a Chinese statesman, historian, essayist and poet of the Northern Song dynasty (1007-1072) who stands among the greatest literary figures of imperial China. As a reformer of prose style and a historian of the Tang and Five Dynasties, he shaped the direction of letters and scholarship for centuries.

== Early Life and Rise ==
Ouyang Xiu was born in 1007 in Luling, in Jiangxi province, into a family of modest means. His father died when he was young, and he was raised by his mother, who is said to have taught him to write by tracing characters in the sand. The story of her teaching became a celebrated example of maternal devotion in Chinese tradition.

He passed the imperial examination in 1030 and began a career in the bureaucracy that combined high office with literary celebrity. He served as a provincial official, a censor, an examiner, and ultimately as a minister of state, and he was repeatedly exiled for his forthright criticism of powerful men at court.

His early advocacy of political reform brought him into conflict with conservative factions, and his participation in the reform movement of Fan Zhongyan led to dismissal and years of provincial service. These experiences gave him a practical knowledge of administration and a deep sympathy for officials whose careers were broken by factional strife.

== Leader of Letters ==
Ouyang Xiu is best known as the leader of the movement to restore the plain, forceful prose of the ancients in place of the ornate parallel style that had long dominated official writing. As chief examiner he used his authority to reward candidates who wrote in the classical manner, and his decisions redirected the taste of a generation.

His own essays are models of clarity and restraint. His record of the pavilion on the Langya mountain, and his accounts of the drunken old man of the hills, combine simplicity of language with a deep feeling for landscape and for the moral life of the official. They were memorised by students for a thousand years.

As a poet he was prolific and versatile in both the regulated verse and the song lyric. He expanded the range of the lyric, bringing into it themes of travel, politics and philosophical reflection that earlier writers had reserved for other forms. He also wrote in the fu form and in the colloquial genres of his day.

== Historical Work ==
Ouyang Xiu was a historian of the first rank. He was the principal author of the New History of the Tang, a revised and more critical account of the Tang dynasty that corrected errors in the earlier official history and improved its treatment of institutions and biography. The work became one of the standard histories of China.

He also compiled the New History of the Five Dynasties, which recorded the turbulent era between the fall of the Tang and the founding of the Song. Its prefaces and judgements set out his view that the collapse of the Five Dynasties was caused by the decay of moral principle among rulers and officials, and that history should instruct as well as record.

In both histories he insisted on evidence, on the comparison of sources, and on the responsibility of the historian to distinguish truth from legend. His principles influenced the historians of later dynasties and helped to establish the critical method that would be carried further by Sima Guang, his younger contemporary.

== Antiquarian and Collecting Interests ==
Ouyang Xiu was a pioneering antiquarian. He collected rubbings of ancient inscriptions and bronze vessels and compiled a catalogue with commentary that examined them both as historical documents and as works of calligraphy. This was among the first systematic studies of its kind and laid foundations for later epigraphy.

His records of the stones allowed him to check and supplement the written histories, and he used the inscriptions to reconstruct the chronology of early dynasties. He also wrote on the development of calligraphy, examining the styles of the great masters and the relation between handwriting and character.

His antiquarian interests were part of a wider scholarly programme that included the study of the classics, ritual and the calendar. He believed that careful philological and material research was essential to the recovery of the true meaning of the ancient texts, and his approach foreshadowed the evidential scholarship of the Qing.

== Influence and Legacy ==
Ouyang Xiu trained and promoted a remarkable generation of writers, including Su Shi, Su Zhe, Wang Anshi and Zeng Gong, who together came to be known as the Eight Great Prose Masters of the Tang and Song. His patronage and example made him the central figure of Northern Song letters and the arbiter of literary fashion.

His conception of the writer as a moral participant in public life, whose prose should serve clarity and truth rather than ornament, became a lasting ideal of the Chinese scholarly tradition. His essays were copied into anthologies for students, and his judgements on history and literature were quoted for centuries.

He died in 1072. His collected works, his histories and his antiquarian writings secured him a place among the founders of the culture of the Song, and modern historians still cite his critical histories and his reflections on the relationship between learning, character and government.
