'''Liu Gongquan''' the Chinese calligrapher and official of the late Tang dynasty (778-865) who, with his predecessor Yan Zhenqing, is remembered as one of the two greatest masters of regular script. His style is celebrated for its taut, bony strength and for the famous maxim that the heart must be upright before the brush can be true.

== Early Life and Court Service ==
Liu Gongquan was born in 778 in Jingzhao, in the region of the Tang capital Chang'an, into a family of scholars and officials. He showed an early talent for letters and for calligraphy, and his disciplined education prepared him for a long career in the imperial bureaucracy. He is said to have studied the brush with exceptional diligence from boyhood, and his skill soon drew notice at court.

He entered government service in his youth and rose steadily through a series of scholarly and administrative posts. He served under several emperors and was entrusted with the composition and copying of important documents, tasks for which a calligrapher of his ability was ideally suited. His honesty and refusal to flatter the powerful marked him as an official of principle as well as an artist.

Among the emperors he served, the most important for his reputation was Muzong, in whose presence he uttered the remark for which he is best remembered. When the emperor asked him for advice on how to write well, he replied that the method lay in the heart rather than the hand: if the heart and mind were upright, the brush would naturally follow. The answer became one of the most quoted sayings in the literature of Chinese calligraphy.

== Calligraphy and the Liu Style ==
Liu Gongquan developed his art from the traditions of his great predecessors. He studied the old masters of the southern schools, the calligraphy of Wang Xizhi, and above all the powerful manner of Yan Zhenqing, but he transformed what he learned into a personal style of remarkable precision. Where Yan was broad and heavy, Liu was taut and spare, and his characters appear to be built of firm, well-stretched sinews rather than of full flesh.

His regular script is admired for its clear and even structure, its sharply cut corners and its air of concentrated energy. Critics coined the phrase Yan jin Liu gu, meaning the sinews of Yan and the bones of Liu, to describe the two complementary ideals of Tang regular script, and for centuries students were urged to master both. Liu's characters were held to possess a strength that could not be bent.

He was equally skilled in the running and cursive scripts, in which his control of the brush allowed him to move with a fluidity that never lapsed into carelessness. Yet it was his formal regular script, disciplined and exact, that defined his reputation and became one of the most copied models in the history of the art. His manner was considered the perfect balance of strength and order.

== Major Works and Inscriptions ==
Among his most famous inscriptions is the Xuanmi Pagoda Stele of 841, written to commemorate a Buddhist structure in the capital. Its characters are slender and firmly jointed, and the work is regarded as the finest surviving example of his regular script. It was widely reproduced in later copybooks and was studied as a standard of exactness by generations of students.

Another celebrated piece is the Shence Army Stele of 843, a long inscription recording the deeds of an imperial guard, whose careful composition shows his mature control of large-scale work. He also wrote the Stele of the Wei Gong Surname Ancestral Hall and numerous other memorial inscriptions, and his hand appears on documents connected with the court, the temples and the great families of the capital.

Beyond inscriptions, manuscripts of his letters and informal writings survive and reveal the range of his art. These short pieces, written for friends and colleagues, show a lighter and more rapid brush than the formal steles, and they were prized by later collectors for their naturalness. His collected writings on official matters and his occasional poems were also preserved by the scholars of his day.

== Ideas on Technique and Character ==
The maxim that the heart must be upright before the brush can be true stands at the centre of Liu Gongquan's teaching. It expresses the Confucian conviction that the moral quality of the writer is inseparable from the quality of the writing, and it gave later critics a formula for judging calligraphy by the character of the calligrapher. The saying was quoted in imperial audiences and repeated in manuals for a thousand years.

In practical terms he taught a firm and controlled grip, an ordered balance among the strokes, and unremitting practice. He held that the wrist should move freely while the characters remain exact, and that speed should never be allowed to spoil proportion. His own work demonstrates this discipline, for even the most rapid of his surviving letters preserves the structure of the formal script.

He was also a careful student of the earlier tradition and believed that a calligrapher must absorb the work of the past before seeking originality. He collected and studied old rubbings, and his advice to younger writers stressed the patient copying of reliable models. This conservative, diligent attitude helped to keep the classical standards of Tang writing alive even as the dynasty declined.

== Influence and Legacy ==
With Yan Zhenqing, Liu Gongquan defined the high classic phase of Tang regular script, and the two names are traditionally paired. His style was adopted as a model in the imperial examinations and in the training of officials, and his inscriptions were printed in the standard copybooks that circulated throughout China. For many students he represented the ideal of correctness combined with vitality.

His influence extended beyond painting and writing into the wider culture of East Asia. Calligraphers in Korea and Japan studied his bony, precise manner, and his name appears in the histories of their traditions as a central authority. His maxim about the upright heart was quoted by scholars far from the Tang capital, and it became part of the common stock of East Asian moral and artistic reflection.

He died in 865 at the age of eighty-seven, having served at court for more than half a century. He is remembered as the last of the great masters of Tang calligraphy and as the man who carried the art of the regular script to one of its most refined points. His exact and sinewy characters remain a standard against which later writing is measured, and his name is inseparable from the golden age of Chinese calligraphy.
