'''Haruki Murakami''' a Japanese novelist, short-story writer and translator (born 1949) whose dreamlike, genre-bending fiction has made him one of the most widely read authors in the world. Blending ordinary urban life with surreal and metaphysical elements, his novels have been translated into more than fifty languages and have won honours including the Jerusalem Prize and the Franz Kafka Prize.

== Early Life and Formation ==
Haruki Murakami was born in Kyoto in 1949 and grew up in Ashiya and Kobe, the only child of parents who both taught Japanese literature. His father's work as a teacher and his mother's family ties to Osaka shaped a household that honoured books, though Murakami rebelled against the traditional canon and read instead the foreign fiction his father collected. He was a solitary, introspective boy who found companionship in American paperbacks, jazz and classical music, and he later said that these Western sources gave him the freedom to invent a prose rhythm unlike the Japanese style of his period.

He studied drama at Waseda University and, after graduating in 1975, he became caught up in student politics and the antiwar mood of the age. In 1974 he opened a jazz bar in Tokyo, Peter Cat, which he ran for several years. The owner's life of late nights and constant music, he later wrote, gave him the discipline and the long perspective out of which his fiction gradually formed. Half a century later the drift and loneliness of those early years remain the raw material of almost everything he has written, from his first novella to his most recent novels.

== Debut and Early Novels ==
Murakami began writing at the age of twenty-nine, convinced that he wanted to reproduce the drifting, cinematic texture of the fiction he loved. His first novella, Hear the Wind Sing, appeared in 1979 and won a prominent literary prize for new writers. It centres on a nameless narrator and a damaged companion, and it established the estrangement and laconic humour that would define his voice. That book, together with Pinball, 1973 and A Wild Sheep Chase, formed the so-called Trilogy of the Rat, which follows an unnamed narrator through bars, apartments and a mysterious search.

A Wild Sheep Chase, published in 1982, brought him a national readership and announced his taste for weaving detective plotting into metaphysical puzzles. These early works already show his central subjects: loneliness, the pull of the past, the porous boundary between sleep and wakefulness, and the quiet violence hidden beneath the surfaces of an orderly society. Their dry, plain manner, closer to American hard-boiled prose than to the lyrical Japanese novel, was itself a statement of independence, and it drew younger readers who felt that his alienated narrators spoke directly to their own lives.

== Major Fiction and International Fame ==
Norwegian Wood, published in 1987, was a realist novel of love and loss set against the student unrest of the late 1960s. Its enormous success made Murakami a celebrity, though he found the attention oppressive and soon left Japan to live in Europe and the United States, teaching and writing away from the pressures of fame. There he produced the great surreal works that made his international name, beginning with Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World and continuing with The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, a sprawling novel of a marriage in crisis and the dark history of the war in Manchuria.

Later novels include Kafka on the Shore, which braids a runaway boy's quest with a talking-cat sculptor and a series of uncanny events, and the vast, elusive 1Q84, begun as a homage to George Orwell and completed in 2010. Each work returns to his abiding motifs: two worlds that mirror and bleed into each other, and a lonely figure who must cross between them. In his later years he has also published collections of short stories and a long, digressive novel about a portrait painter, showing no loss of appetite for his dreamlike materials.

== Themes, Style and Technique ==
Murakami writes in a pared, deliberate prose that translators have compared to a musical score; he composes on a word processor, often in English first and then rewrites in Japanese, a method that helps him achieve his characteristic flatness and clarity. Food, sleep, running and pop music recur as anchors, grounding his most fantastic inventions in everyday ritual. His central preoccupations are solitude, the effort to connect with another person, and the shadow side of modern Japan, and his best pages make the ordinary feel quietly ominous.

Wells, cats, ears, sheep, doubles and alternate realities recur as symbols, and his narrators are usually passive men who stumble into mysteries larger than themselves. Violence, when it comes, is often sudden and inexplicable, dramatising the fragility of an apparently peaceful order. Critics have debated whether his refusal of conventional resolution is a weakness or the source of his power, but few deny his instinct for the uncanny and his ability to make the surreal feel inevitable, drawing at once on Kafka, Chandler, Dostoevsky and Japanese ghost stories for a fiction that speaks directly to modern loneliness.

== Influence and Legacy ==
Murakami has become one of the most translated and imitated writers of his time, and his name now stands for a whole mode of contemporary fiction in which the mundane and the magical coexist without comment. Writers in Asia and the West alike have absorbed his dream logic, his direct address to the reader and his taste for the ordinary detail made strange. Beyond fiction he has published travel writing, essays and criticism, and he has translated into Japanese the work of Raymond Carver, F. Scott Fitzgerald and others, enriching the literary exchange between Japan and the English-speaking world.

He has also spoken publicly about the 1995 sarin attack and the earthquake of that year, subjects he explored in Underground. He is a devoted long-distance runner and a famously private man who dislikes the trappings of celebrity, and he has often explained his method in terms of routine and stamina. Awards and honours have accumulated, and each new novel provokes a global event, yet his work remains resistant to easy summary, and he is widely regarded as the most influential Japanese novelist of his age and among the most original storytellers alive.
