'''Guo Shoujing''' the Chinese astronomer, hydraulic engineer and mathematician of the Yuan dynasty (1231-1316) who reformed the calendar and built the water systems that supplied the new Mongol capital. Working under Kublai Khan, he devised instruments of remarkable precision, determined the length of the solar year more accurately than any predecessor, and earned a reputation as one of the greatest scientists of imperial China.

== Early Life and Training ==
Guo Shoujing was born in 1231 in Xingtai, in the north of what is now Hebei province. He was orphaned young and was raised by his grandfather, who taught him astronomy and mathematics and encouraged his aptitude for practical mechanics. Even as a boy he showed the curiosity about natural phenomena and the talent for construction that would define his career.

He came to the attention of the Mongol authorities through his engineering skill, notably when he repaired a water clock and designed irrigation works as a young man. He studied the ancient mathematical and astronomical texts and mastered the traditional methods while remaining open to new techniques and foreign ideas, including those brought by Muslim scholars from Central Asia.

He entered the service of the Mongol state and was employed on hydraulic projects before being drawn into the reform of the calendar, the task for which he is best known. His combination of theoretical knowledge and practical craftsmanship made him ideally suited to the ambitious schemes of Kublai's government.

== Calendar Reform and Astronomy ==
The traditional Chinese calendar had drifted out of agreement with the heavens, and Kublai ordered a thorough reform. Guo Shoujing and his colleague Wang Xun conducted observations across a network of stations spread over a great span of latitude, from Siberia to the tropics, an enterprise of unprecedented scale. The data they gathered underpinned the new calendar, the Shoushi calendar, promulgated in 1281.

The resulting calendar established the length of the tropical year at 365.2425 days, a figure astonishingly close to the modern value and one not equalled in Europe for several centuries. It remained in use, with adjustments, for more than three hundred years. The accuracy of the achievement rested on careful measurement and on a rigorous treatment of the accumulated errors of older systems.

To make such measurements possible Guo Shoujing invented or improved a series of instruments. The most famous was the simplified armillary sphere, or abridged instrument, which reduced the number of rings so that observation was less obstructed, and the gnomon, a tall vertical pillar used with a graduated horizontal scale to measure the shadow of the sun and thereby the solstices.

== Hydraulic Engineering and the Grand Canal ==
Guo Shoujing's talents were not confined to astronomy. He was one of the leading hydraulic engineers of his age, responsible for the design and construction of canals, reservoirs and irrigation systems. His most celebrated work was the extension of the Grand Canal to the new capital at Dadu, now Beijing, so that grain from the fertile south could reach the court by water.

The problem was difficult because Beijing lies beyond the natural reach of the southern waterways, and the terrain required a bold solution. He tapped springs in the hills to the north and led their waters into a summit-level canal, using locks and carefully graded channels to control the flow. The project, completed in the early 1290s, made the capital dependent on a single integrated water system.

He also carried out surveys of rivers and levels, built dykes to control floods, and advised on the repair of the Yellow River and other waterways. His approach combined observation of the landscape, measurement of gradients and the pragmatic use of materials, and his works supplied the model for later canal engineering in northern China.

== Mathematics and the Sciences ==
In mathematics Guo Shoujing worked on the solution of equations and on methods of interpolation, developing techniques for fitting curves to astronomical data. He employed a form of cubic interpolation to model the changing speed of the sun along the ecliptic, a sophisticated use of mathematics to represent natural phenomena. His methods were studied by later Chinese mathematicians.

He also contributed to spherical trigonometry, which was essential for converting observations into positions on the celestial sphere, and he wrote on the construction and use of astronomical instruments. His writings, known collectively as the Shoushi calendar and its associated texts, preserved both his results and the reasoning behind them for later generations.

His work reflects the vigour of Yuan science, which drew on the Chinese tradition and on the knowledge of the Muslim astronomers employed at court. The exchange of techniques between these traditions, in which Guo Shoujing participated, made the late thirteenth century a period of unusual scientific fertility in East Asia.

== Influence and Recognition ==
Guo Shoujing died in 1316, honoured as one of the foremost servants of the Yuan state. His calendar and his instruments influenced Chinese astronomy for centuries, and his canal works continued to serve the capital long after his death. Later astronomers, including those employed by the Ming and the Jesuits who reformed the calendar in the seventeenth century, studied and acknowledged his achievements.

Modern historians regard him as one of the greatest scientists in Chinese history, and his estimate of the solar year is often cited as the most accurate in the world before the Gregorian reform. A crater on the Moon and an asteroid have been named after him, and he is honoured as a symbol of Chinese scientific attainment.

His career illustrates the close connection between astronomy, mathematics and engineering in the imperial service, where the calendar was both a practical necessity and a sign of the ruler's legitimacy. By combining observation, calculation and construction he embodied the ideal of the scholar-official who could master both theory and practice.
