'''Feng Youlan''' the twentieth-century Chinese philosopher and historian of Chinese philosophy (1895-1990) who is widely regarded as the founder of modern Chinese philosophical scholarship. His two-volume History of Chinese Philosophy reshaped the study of the subject in China and abroad, and his own system, built around the concept of the new理学, sought to give traditional thought a modern logical form.

== Early Life and Education ==
Feng Youlan was born on 4 December 1895 in Tanghe, Henan province, into a family with a scholarly and commercial background. He received a traditional classical education as a child and entered Peking University in 1915, where he studied Chinese philosophy and literature. These years of classical training gave him an intimate knowledge of the Confucian canon that he would later reinterpret in modern terms.

After graduating he travelled to the United States and studied at Columbia University, where he came under the influence of the American pragmatists and idealists and encountered the methods of Western logical analysis. He completed his doctoral dissertation on a comparative topic and received his degree in 1923, returning to China to take up university teaching. The synthesis of Western logic and Chinese tradition that he began there became the hallmark of his career.

He taught at several institutions, including Peking University and Tsinghua University, where he built a reputation as one of the most rigorous philosophical minds of his generation. He was among the first Chinese scholars to treat the history of Chinese philosophy as a discipline with its own methods, and his teaching and writing shaped a whole cohort of students.

== The History of Chinese Philosophy ==
His two-volume History of Chinese Philosophy, published in Chinese in 1931 and 1934, is the work that established his reputation. It was the first comprehensive survey of the subject to be written on modern critical principles, ordering more than two thousand years of thought into schools and periods and examining each thinker with attention to text, context and argument. The Chinese original remains influential and was supplemented by a later volume on modern thought.

The work was distinctive for its use of Western categories to organise Chinese material while resisting the reduction of Chinese thought to Western terms. It treated the Chinese tradition as a series of genuine philosophical positions open to logical criticism rather than as a mere repository of wisdom. This methodological stance drew both admiration and sharp debate from contemporaries.

An English translation by Derk Bodde made the book the standard introduction to Chinese philosophy for generations of Western readers, and it remains a standard reference despite the growth of later scholarship. Through it, a great many readers first encountered the thinkers of the Chinese tradition in a systematic and analytical form.

== The New Rationalism ==
Beyond his historical work, Feng Youlan developed an original philosophical system that he called the new rationalism, the xin lixue, presented most fully in the New Rationalism and related writings. The system attempted to provide a modern restatement of the Neo-Confucian doctrine of principle, li, using the tools of logical analysis to clarify the structure of reality and of moral value.

Central to the system is the distinction between the actual and the real, and the claim that philosophy can lead the mind to a state of understanding in which the distinctions of ordinary thought are transcended. He identified four realms of living, ranging from the innocent and the utilitarian to the moral and the transcendent, and argued that the goal of human life is to rise through them toward the highest.

His method combined the logical analysis he had learned in the West with the metaphysical ambitions of the Chinese tradition. He insisted that philosophy is analysis rather than the discovery of new facts, and that its value lies in the clarity it brings rather than in any increase of knowledge. This conception placed him among the most systematic Chinese philosophers of the century.

== Public Life and the Later Years ==
Feng Youlan's career was deeply entangled with the political upheavals of twentieth-century China. He was in Beijing during the war with Japan and moved with his university to the southwest, where teaching continued under difficult conditions. His public prominence made him a target of political criticism for many years.

During the Cultural Revolution he was subjected to severe criticism and forced to recant his ideas publicly, a humiliation he described in his later autobiography. He survived the period and, in his final decades, resumed a public role as an elder of Chinese philosophy, publishing a final seven-volume history of Chinese philosophy in his old age.

He died on 26 November 1990 in Beijing at the age of ninety-four. His long life spanned the transformation of China from empire to republic to modern state, and his intellectual journey mirrored the efforts of a generation to reconcile tradition with modernity under extraordinary pressure.

== Influence and Legacy ==
Feng Youlan did more than any other single figure to establish the history of Chinese philosophy as a modern academic discipline. His periodisation, his analytical approach and his insistence on treating Chinese texts as philosophy all became standard, and virtually every later scholar of the field has worked in dialogue with him, whether in agreement or in dissent.

His own philosophical system stimulated discussion of how traditional Chinese metaphysics might be given a rigorous modern form. Though fewer thinkers today adopt its metaphysical framework, its ambition and its logical discipline set an example for later constructive work. His autobiography has become a valuable document of intellectual life under political pressure.

He is remembered as a bridge between the classical and the modern, a scholar who brought the analytical rigour of Western philosophy to bear on the Chinese tradition without abandoning its deepest concerns. His name remains attached to the founding of the field, and his History still stands as the starting point for the study of Chinese thought.
