'''Fan Xingzhun''' a physician, editor and medical scholar of the Southern Song dynasty (c. 1200-1280) who revised and expanded the great prescription compendium of Chen Yuan into a comprehensive formulary that served practitioners for centuries.

== Life and Background ==
Fan Xingzhun, styled Wende, came from the region of Jianyang in Fujian and was active in the thirteenth century, in the later decades of the Southern Song. He was a physician and a scholar of wide reading, working in a period when the printing of books had made medical knowledge more widely available than ever before and when compilers sought to gather the scattered inheritance of earlier centuries into single, orderly works.

He was associated with the circle of physicians around Chen Yuan, and the two men were related through the scholarly and medical networks of Fujian. Their collaboration illustrates how medical learning was transmitted in the Southern Song: through families, disciples, shared manuscripts and the careful revision of one another's compilations. Fan took the practical books of the tradition and sought to perfect them, adding material and correcting what seemed defective.

His reputation rested on his skill as a prescriber and on his diligence as an editor. He was concerned above all with usefulness, with formulas that had been proved in practice and with the accurate transmission of clinical knowledge. His major achievement was not the invention of new theory but the completion of a great reference work that brought the medicine of his age into a single convenient form.

== The Expanded Formulary ==
Fan Xingzhun is chiefly remembered for his revision of the Complete Effective Prescriptions for Women by Chen Yuan. He took that handbook and expanded it greatly, adding further prescriptions, cases and discussions until it became a comprehensive formulary of medical practice far beyond the care of women alone. In this enlarged form it is generally known as the Great Complete Effective Prescriptions, one of the most substantial medical compilations of the Southern Song.

The work ranges over internal medicine, diseases of women and children, disorders of the sense organs, wounds and external complaints, and the treatment of epidemic illness. For each condition it lists symptoms and prescriptions, often several alternatives, with notes on their preparation and their indications. It was designed to be consulted directly by the practising physician, and its wealth of material made it a small medical library in itself.

Fan's editorial method combined respect for received authority with an eye to practical utility. He retained the classical formulas that had proved their worth, added remedies from many sources, and arranged the whole so that related matters stood together. His additions reflect both the clinical experience of his circle and the wide reading of a scholar determined to leave nothing useful out.

== Clinical Approach ==
The medicine of Fan Xingzhun and his colleagues was eclectic and pragmatic. In an age of rival schools, one emphasising cold and cooling remedies, another warm and tonifying ones, Fan avoided extremes. He judged each case by its signs, chose the prescription that fitted, and modified it as the illness changed, preferring the formula that answered the actual condition to the theory that flattered a faction.

Much of his material concerns the disorders prevalent in the south: fevers and damp complaints, digestive ailments, and the diseases that followed the warm and humid climate of the region. He gave attention to the treatment of children and of the elderly, whose constitutions require gentler measures, and to the care of patients weakened by long illness or by the loss of blood, for whom the strengthening of the body's resources was the first concern.

He insisted on the importance of accurate preparation of drugs and of fidelity to the classical recipes. Dosages, the methods of boiling and compounding, and the combining of ingredients were matters he treated with care, for the potency of a prescription depends on how it is made. This attention to the practical craft of the pharmacy, alongside the theory of treatment, gives his compilation its enduring value.

== Scholarship and Transmission ==
Fan worked in the great age of Chinese printing, when the imperial court, the academies and private families all sponsored the publication of books. Woodblock printing made the multiplication of medical texts comparatively cheap, and scholars were able to assemble and circulate works of a size that earlier ages could hardly have copied. Fan's great formulary belongs to this world of enlarged and widely disseminated knowledge.

His contribution lay in the patient labour by which scattered and imperfect writings were drawn together into a usable whole, corrected, expanded and set in order. Such work was essential to the continuity of the tradition, for without it the accumulated experience of physicians would have remained dispersed in a multitude of small and fragile manuscripts.

The compilations produced by Fan and his fellow editors shaped the reading and the practice of physicians for generations. They preserved older formulas and observations that might otherwise have been lost, and they made the medicine of the Southern Song available to the Ming and Qing, which reprinted and quoted them extensively and treated them as repositories of established knowledge.

== Influence and Legacy ==
The Great Complete Effective Prescriptions remained a standard reference in the centuries after its compilation. It was consulted by physicians throughout China, quoted in later compendia, and reprinted whenever the demand for medical books required it. Its breadth and its practical orientation made it a work that practitioners kept at hand, and it carried the clinical wisdom of the Southern Song forward into later medicine.

Fan Xingzhun is remembered as one of the great medical compilers of his age. Though he did not found a school of theory, his work in gathering and completing the formulary gave physicians a resource of lasting importance, and his name is joined with that of Chen Yuan as a maker of the tradition of practical therapeutics in which the south excelled.

His life illustrates a central feature of Chinese medical history: the role of the editor and preserver in the transmission of knowledge. Because scholars such as Fan devoted themselves to accurate and comprehensive compilation, the healing art could build upon its past, and each generation could begin from a fuller store of experience than the one before. He is honoured for that patient and consequential labour.
