'''Chen Zai''' a physician and medical author of the Southern Song dynasty (c. 1200-1270) who, with his relative Chen Yuan and Fan Xingzhun, produced a systematic handbook of gynaecology and obstetrics that became a standard work of the tradition.

== Life and Background ==
Chen Zai, whose courtesy name was Wenze, was a native of Jianyang in Fujian province and lived during the thirteenth century. He belonged to the scholarly medical circle that gathered around Chen Yuan, and he was linked to that older physician by ties of family as well as of learning. Like many educated men of his class he had studied the classics, but he gave his working life to medicine and to the writing of medical books.

The Southern Song was a time of intense intellectual activity in medicine. The great debates over the theory of prescribing were at their height, and scholars were producing handbooks and compendia that organised the knowledge of earlier centuries for the use of the physician. Chen Zai worked within this movement, taking up the subject of the diseases of women and of childbirth and giving it systematic and orderly treatment.

He was known for his careful scholarship and for his close reading of the classical sources, and he combined this textual learning with practical experience in the treatment of patients. His writing reflects an orderly and methodical mind, concerned to set out the material clearly and to leave nothing relevant unsaid, and it earned him a place among the recognised authors of the Southern Song medical tradition.

== The Correct Method for Women ==
Chen Zai is chiefly remembered for his work on gynaecology and obstetrics, the Furen Daquan Liangfang, or Correct Method in the Care of Women, a handbook devoted to the diseases peculiar to women. The book treats menstruation and its disorders, the ailments of pregnancy, the management of labour and delivery, and the diseases of the puerperium, together with the care of the newborn child.

The work is distinguished by its close regulation of the classical formulas to the conditions of women, adapting the prescriptions of the general tradition to the special needs of the female body. Chen discussed the signs by which a pregnancy is confirmed, the dangers that threaten it, the treatment of the various kinds of miscarriage and difficult labour, and the disorders that follow childbirth, and he gave practical instructions for the preparation and use of the remedies.

He paid particular attention to the support of the mother's strength during labour and to the recovery of her health afterwards, urging rest, warmth, proper nourishment and freedom from anxiety. In this concern with regimen and with the conditions of recovery, as much as with drugs, he carried forward the classical teaching that the preservation of health is the physician's highest art.

== Collaboration and the Tradition ==
The relationships among the medical scholars of Fujian were close and productive. Chen Yuan composed his handbook on the care of women, Fan Xingzhun expanded it into a great formulary, and Chen Zai produced a related and parallel work on the same subject. Their books circulated together, were quoted in one another and in later compilations, and came to be regarded as a connected body of teaching on the diseases of women.

This overlapping labour was characteristic of the age, in which medical knowledge advanced not only through individual insight but through the patient accumulation and revision of shared texts. Each author built upon what his predecessors and contemporaries had gathered, and the result was a richer and more reliable account than any one of them could have produced alone. The tradition of women's medicine in the Southern Song was the fruit of such cooperation.

Chen Zai's work shares with the related handbooks a practical and accessible character. It was meant to guide the physician at the bedside, and it set out symptoms, diagnoses and prescriptions in a form that could be followed directly. Accuracy of observation, fidelity to classical authority and a sober judgement among competing remedies are the qualities it values and displays.

== The Medicine of Women and Children ==
In the care of women, Chen Zai and his colleagues debated the relative importance of nourishing the blood and of regulating the flow of qi, balancing the two in proportion to the patient's condition. Disorders of menstruation were understood as disturbances of the regular movement of blood and qi, and their treatment aimed to restore that regularity by appropriate warming, cooling, strengthening or dispersing remedies.

The treatment of pregnancy and childbirth called for special caution, since the physician had to consider the welfare of both mother and child. Chen advised gentleness in the use of strong drugs, attention to the bearing and the pulse of the mother, and readiness to act with decision when labour did not proceed as it should. The wellbeing of the infant, too, was a subject of care, and he gave directions for feeding, bathing and tending the newborn.

These concerns link his work with the broader development of paediatrics in Chinese medicine, which grew into a recognised specialty in the same period. The diseases of women and of children, requiring a delicate and individual touch, gave scope for the physician's most careful judgment, and the handbooks of the Southern Song, of which Chen Zai's was one, supplied the model for later writings in these fields.

== Influence and Legacy ==
Chen Zai's handbook on the care of women was repeatedly copied, printed and cited, and it was absorbed into the larger compilations of later centuries. Physicians of the Ming and Qing turned to it for guidance on the disorders of women and on the management of childbirth, and its prescriptions passed into the common stock of the tradition. Its influence persisted long after its author's time.

He is remembered as one of the group of Southern Song scholars, centred in Fujian, who gave the medicine of women a systematic and reliable form. Their works, taken together, constitute a landmark in the history of Chinese obstetrics and gynaecology, and Chen Zai's contribution to it is secure.

His name stands for the patient, scholarly side of the healing art: the careful compilation of experience, the exact adaptation of classical formulas to particular cases, and the humane concern for mother and child at the most vulnerable moments of life. Through these qualities his book served generations of physicians and helped to make the care of women a recognised branch of Chinese medicine.
