'''Carl Lewis''' the American track and field athlete (born 1961) who won nine Olympic gold medals and is considered one of the greatest athletes of the twentieth century. A sprinter and long jumper of remarkable versatility, he matched and then surpassed the achievements of Jesse Owens, and his long career at the top of his sport set standards of consistency and longevity that few have approached.

== Early Life and Athletic Family ==
Frederick Carlton Lewis was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and grew up in Willingboro, New Jersey, in a family devoted to athletics. Both of his parents were track and field coaches, and his brother and sister also became accomplished athletes. He was introduced to the sport almost as soon as he could walk, competing in age-group meetings and developing the speed and jumping ability that would define his career.

As a schoolboy he showed unusual all-round talent, competing in sprints, jumps and relays. He attended the University of Houston, where he was coached by Tom Tellez, who refined his technique and helped him to translate raw ability into world-class performances. Under Tellez he studied the mechanics of sprinting and jumping with the care of a technician.

By the time he reached his early twenties he had established himself among the leading American athletes, and his ambitions were openly large. He spoke of winning multiple Olympic gold medals and of matching the achievement of Jesse Owens, whose four victories at the 1936 Games had become a landmark in the sport.

== Olympic Career ==
At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles Lewis equalled the achievement of Jesse Owens by winning four gold medals, in the 100 metres, the 200 metres, the long jump and the 4 x 100 metres relay. The performances made him the central figure of those Games and matched a feat that had stood for nearly half a century. He defended the long jump title at each of the following three Olympic Games.

At the 1988 Games in Seoul he won gold in the 100 metres after the disqualification of Ben Johnson for a doping violation, took silver in the 200 metres and gold in the long jump, and anchored the winning relay team. Four years later in Barcelona he won the long jump and anchored another victorious relay, and at the 1996 Games in Atlanta he won the long jump for a fourth consecutive time.

His nine Olympic gold medals place him among the most successful Olympians in history, and his four consecutive long jump titles remain without parallel. He also won multiple World Championship titles and set world records, establishing a record of sustained excellence across more than a decade of competition.

== World Records and Technical Mastery ==
Lewis set world records in the 100 metres, the 200 metres and the long jump, and he was a member of relay teams that set world records. His long jump of 8.79 metres, achieved at the 1991 World Championships in a celebrated contest with Mike Powell, remains one of the finest competitions in the event's history, even though Powell won that duel with a world record.

His technique in the sprints was characterised by efficient mechanics and a powerful finish, and in the long jump by a fast approach and the ability to convert horizontal speed into distance. He studied films of his own performances and adjusted details of his stride and take-off, treating his events as problems of applied physics as much as of natural talent.

His versatility across sprint and jump events was unusual, since the training demands of the two disciplines differ considerably. He managed them with careful periodisation, and his ability to peak for major championships year after year became a model for the preparation of elite athletes.

== Rivalries and Public Life ==
Lewis's career was marked by intense rivalries, most famously with the Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson, whose disqualification at Seoul handed Lewis the 100 metres title, and with the long jumper Mike Powell, whose world record in 1991 ended Lewis's unbeaten run in the event. These contests drew huge audiences and raised the profile of athletics in the 1980s and 1990s.

He was not always a popular figure during his competitive years. His confidence and his willingness to state his ambitions were sometimes resented, and he attracted criticism for his commercial ventures and for his occasional disputes with officials. In time, however, his achievements were recognised more warmly, and he came to be regarded as an elder statesman of the sport.

After retiring from competition he pursued interests in acting, music and business, and he remained involved in athletics as a commentator and advocate. He has supported charitable and educational work, and he has spoken about the discipline and preparation that sustained his long career.

== Influence and Legacy ==
Lewis bridged the era of Owens and the modern professional athlete, competing at the highest level from the early 1980s into the late 1990s. His nine Olympic golds and his multiple world records made him a symbol of American achievement in track and field, and his name is routinely mentioned among the greatest Olympians of all time.

His longevity is perhaps his most remarkable quality. To win the long jump at four successive Olympic Games required not only talent but also the discipline to remain fit and motivated across sixteen years, adapting his training as he aged and as younger rivals emerged.

He is remembered as a complete athlete, equally at home in the sprints and the jumping events, and as a figure who helped to globalise the sport through television and the growth of the World Championships. His duels and records gave athletics some of its most memorable moments, and his example continues to inspire sprinters and jumpers around the world.
